Ah, but I suspect some DNMSoC voting - did not meet standard of challenge - free studies are tough! |

I've been tempted to comment "This isn't free." as a joke. But I haven't.
I'll definitely vote 100% and my goal is to comment on all 4s and below. So far that's been very, very few. So maybe 5s and below. |

Well, "all 4s and below" doesn't mean "only 4s and below!" |

Been lagging a bit today.
None of the comments are "nice shot" or "pretty picture" types, and that's what takes time.

I plan on commenting more, but I'm sure I won't make 100%. Too many things to do this week. School starts here this week and I haven't finished shopping! |

Kudos to those going through and commenting them all.
I think the other important implication of Brad's point of how nice the free studies are, is that we should have more!
I think I've suggested it before, but I'd love to see monthly free studies where you can submit any picture you took that month.
And in quarterly free studies, I think it should be any picture you took in the last quarter.
As a side benefit, this encourages more participation for those of us who are more and more just shooting for ourselves (rather than challenge topics). I know when I have slowed down in entering challenges, my participation just naturally (and unfortunately) slowed down here as well (including forums, voting, commenting, and critique club).
(Sorry if this point is tangential to the topic or a hijaak!)

I think monthly free-studies is an excellent suggestion. I would like to see that, and in the 720 px size. |

Not a hijack at all Neil.
My main point was not about the drive to comment on them all, but more so in my opening statement:
Each image is a surprise.
Each is something meaningful to the artist.
Each is a proud statement of their world.
Each brought them joy and are willing to share them with us.
Oh the joy each click brings to my monitor.
Though large in numbers, the collection is a joy to view.
More free studies would raise the spirits around this place more than we know. Too many fine photographers have stepped to the sidelines on this site or left completely, and I suspect that a great deal of it is/was due to the petty microscope scrutiny voters have shown in what meets/doesn't meet a challenge and their images getting kicked in the dirt.
Edit to add:
And just as I posted this, I noticed Free Study XIII with 720 pixels & 200kb again!!
Way to go in getting this site back on track and a fun place to be!!!
Thanks D & L !

I find it very difficult to vote. An immediately efficient strategy would seem to give every picture ten and then find reasons to remove a point here and there. I may even end up doing that, but it's a sad thing to do because it's a kind of negative voting.
But yes, 637 beautiful pictures + mine. |

The very sad part about this comment is that it fails to recognize one very fundamental aspect of the challenges... that being that as a rule they have a "Theme".
If the authors of the said images do not meet the challenge themes, then the voters are completely within their rights to vote according to their views.
You are indeed right that "Free Studies" do open the door to a wider spectrum of images... whether all of these are indeed of higher quality is something that is open to interpretation and debate.
Just a thought.

Done with voting. Some really fine work, folks! Though I'm wondering if we need separate "Free Study" categories for IR, hummingbirds, butterflies and bees. :-)
I'll go back and comment more as time permits.

Snap here. I see Langdon has done it again with another free study. I certainly like the way it is going.... Keep the weeklys theme-based and have a monthly free. Sometimes one takes a great photograph and can't use it for the theme.
