I wanted to take the time to apologize to any who found my comments in the post "Why Do I Have To Vote On Some Photos?" offensive. I did not mean to offend the entire crowd and realize that I was wrong to voice such a strong opinion. In the future, I will keep my thoughts to myself. All the best... |

I wasn't offended but I wondered then, and I wonder now, why it seems so hard for people to vote and/or to make comments. If a comment were left every visit to the site, or 5 votes were made then it wouldn't feel so overwhelming. I gather from other threads that everyone checks in to the update stats button all the time. I am slow with comments because I am learning but it can still make a huge difference to those who entered and I do them a little at a time. Thanks for apology though.

strong opinions are fine, even voicing a strong opinion is fine, but the way you couched your opinion was offensive. Essentially you asked a group of photographers why you should have to vote on their crap. Not a great way to win friends or, more importantly, have people understand your point. If you meant to say "I don't like that I have to vote on 20%" or "I don't want to have to look at every picture to vote on the ones I feel like voting on" you might have been better understood (if that is indeed what you meant).
I suppose the biggest point was that the way you said what you felt was not constructive, and as we are all here to learn and share, it felt very much against the grain.
In any event, it is very mature of you to offer an apology, and I thank you for it.

My main meaning was the latter. I think the voting format could be improved and made less time consuming when the photo field of entries is so large. But as it is, I wanted to apologize because since I have not chosen to purchase membership at this site, perhaps it was not in my best interest to involve myself in its politics. Though I do want to say that the voting format is part of what prevents me from joining. |

If you can remind yourself that the primary purpose of this site is to facilitate (mostly) amateur photographers helping each other become better, not to win prizes (or make an income) then I think you'll feel less bothered by the vagaries of the voting system or the inconsistencies of the submissions.
You weren't hired to curate a collection, you signed up for an exchange program where you submit a photo for evaluation by (approximately) everyone else who also submits. Why isn't it reasonable that everyone should try and vote on everyone else's photo? It's clearly permitted (but not very fair, IMO) to look at the thumbnails page and only vote on photos you like and skip ones you don't, but I don't think the site should facilitate that approach. The "worse" photos are the ones which need help most.
If you just want to look a pretty pictures, why don't you skip voting altogether and just browse the galleries?
If looking at so many photos at once bothers a lot of people, perhaps the site should consider "serving" each voter a randomized subset of the entries (like a 20% chunk), and only after finishing those would they get another batch to vote on.
You have the right to vote by whatever criteria you want, but if everyone adopted your approach, I doubt the site would be recognizable in a relatively few months. But thanks for trying to clarify what you meant in reasonable way! |
