I am looking at buying a new photo printer. Currently I'm looking at the Epson R2400 with a continous ink system.Ink Republic has one for $340. Any comments or alternatives would be be grately appreciated.

I am curious about this too because I am one step away from buying a printer.

As far as I know, the continuous ink systems all require the use of refillable inks. Epson only does expensive cartridges.

Therefore, the continuous ink system would PRESUMABLY be exclusive to using aftermarket inks.

I am not really sure how aftermarket inks perform.

I've read a few older articles (specifically on the Wikipedia, which I've grown to have a mild mistrust with the details of most things) that say that they are bad for print quality and also pose a small risk to the mechanism of the printer. There were no specifics listed with that part of the article though.

I've not been able to find any other information though on using aftermarket inks currently. I cannot say for sure that the inks are still of lower quality. The major issues were regarding the consistency of the pigments, drying speeds and color accuracy I believe.

If I recall correctly, Epson and Canon use different methods for dispensing the ink droplets. Epson uses Piezo electronic dispensing. I'm not sure how that does with the risk of clogging with inferior inks, but Epson IS set up to use larger droplets, so one would guess that it would be less susceptible to clogging.
