I have recently aquired a couple of lenses which I'm looking for advice on. The first lens is a Canon 500mm f4.5 FD mount and the second is a Tamron 300mm f2.8 adaptall 2. The Canon question is simply; can the mount be changed to fit an EOS? I appreciate that the electronics won't be there and stop down may need to be manual. With regard to the Tamron, as I have a Minolta 5D, does anyone know if the Adaptall 2 mount for the Maxxum will somehow enable stop down of the aperture? I am being told that the stop down will work on my camera, but I'm not convinced. Any help appreciated.

Yes, you can get adapters to fit Canon FD lenses to EOS cameras. B&H sells a few, and I've seen them for sale on eBay too. I don't know how well they work.

To elaborate on the FD converter, it requires glass elements, it's not just a mount adapter. This is because the EOS "mount register distance" which is defined as the distance from the front surface of the camera-body mount to the sensor/film plane, is larger than for FD. That implies that to mount an FD lens on an ESO body, the back of the lens would need to be inside the body, in this case by 2mm.
There is (was?) someone in Iowa offering to convert an FD lens to EOS mount by manufacturing a new mount. I can't find a reference to him right now, but I originally spotted it on DPReview. The cost was a couple hundred US dollars I believe. |

Update. I found the post on DPReview, but the gentleman's website indicates that due to a serious medical condition, he's unable to continue to do work on lenses :-( |

Thanks for the info, much appreciated! Anyone have any idea on how the Adaptall 2 Maxxum mount would cope with apertures? This is the lens I have a slight chance of keeping for myself so naturally I'm more interested in whether this would be possible.
Cheers,
