You can see the effect when using polarized sun glasses while using a polarizer.
I tried it with two circular polarizers, and it didn't work as well as the linear ones. It gave me a brownish white balance for some reason. It may just be the two polarizers that I was using interacting somehow.
I have done that many times with linear polarizers, and you may get a strange white balance, sometimes toward blue, sometimes toward brown. It does work though.

If you really want long exposures you can buy welding filters and cut them to fit a Cokin style holder. They come in ranges to #12. You can comfortably look directly into the sun with a #12. The big filters are about 5.5 inches square. You can also get "Medicated" ones, with the gold tint that looks and works like the gold tint in space helment shields, reflecting infra red and uv light.
