I wouldn't worry about it... no matter what you do as far as calibration here, you're going to be off with 50% of the viewers. Imposible to be right on for everyone. Stay with what you have. your stuff looks dead on to me... :) |

after my hit from the bong....
just remember that when someone suggests something, you don't have to do it...it's just a suggestion...i thought it was a good one too...i could see all the different shades and so i don't think i need calibration so i left the subject alone...and now it's just being thrown way out of porportion....thanks idnic...for the giggle.
now back to my other hit...hehehehhe |

You're right. I know alot (probably most) monitors aren't truly calibrated (mine included). I just wish it wasn't so difficult to be sure if what you're seeing is actually as it should be.
And let me clarify, just in case it isn't clear, my frustrations have everything to do with myself and my monitor and nothing to do with Leroys suggestion. It was very helpful and got me to take a look at how I was seeing things. Someone made mention about Peete's "Steve" entry and how they couldn't see the bubble around the man. I too had a very hard time seeing the bubble while others were saying they could see it as clear as day. So I knew something was up with my monitor and this just confirmed it.
Needless to say, I probably won't be voting on the Silhouette challenge until I get this blasted monitor set up correctly. :-)
Thanks for the suggestion Leroy! Now go have fun frolicking in the flower fields with Cindi and the happy weeds. :-D |

You can get close with contrast/brightness... if you have photoshop, use Adobe Gamma in your Windows (if you are using windows) control panel to fine tune it.
If you don't have PS, Microsoft has a color management tool here. That does about the same thing.

Just wanted to say thanks again. I've been playing with calibration between my mac book at home and my flat CRT PC monitor at work. I think with this graphic I finally have them both calibrated for black and white... color is still a little different, but this certainly helped.
I was getting frustrated because images (photos, work stuff etc..) looked so much darker/saturated at work and much more clean at home (which also showed a ton more flaws in my blacks).

Thank you for this post! I have a dual monitor setup and they are both very different. I wondered which is true. According to your scale they are both off on both ends of the spectrum. My main monitor blends the two last blacks together. The other blends the two first whites. How odd. I start with my main and do my basic editing and then move it to the lighter one to check if my cloneing shows up.
This is going to require a little research now.
Thanks!

Jen, check out the Huey. Very inexpensive and you leave it attached to the USB port and it tracks room brightness and adjusts for you. It was on sale a month ago for only $59--posted that but no replies so I don't know how many people jumped on board. I just checked again, and that pric is gone, but it's still pretty reasonable at $69-$79.
Works pretty well IMHO, and my LCD monitors were way off before I got it!

You have to be careful using that bar. Ambient lighting around your computer can really skew results with it. I use the Eye One and I'm always able to see every division on that bar at my normal viewing light. Which is no direct light around the monitor. Dim reflected light only. I usually only do a final proof on my images after dark. ;)

Oh, and here's a linky for those of you who want to do it without extra hardware. But I do recommend the Huey (by Pantone).

I always considered silhouette to have no detail, but the challenge description says:
"Details: Silhouettes are created by backlit subjects, which causes them to appear solid and without much, if any detail. Submit your best silhouette taken this week!"
Bold is mine for emphasis. I believe that leaves the door a bit open for a bit of detail. |
Very well stated.
I think some of the "discussions" have been mis-directed to "calibrate or not" and "definition of silhouette". IMHO it really comes down to understanding of the challenge description and rating/commenting fairly based on that. Of course "without much" is somewhat subjective, as most other things here at DPC.
Sorry, couldn't resist commenting here.
What ever happened to the saying "Don't worry...be happy"? I kind of liked that. :-)
