I think we need to give the SC volunteers more things to do.

This business of random validation and top-10 validation during the challenge might conceivably result in some "no original provided" DQs that are extremely unfair. Or, to combat that potential, an absolute inundation of the servers with "just in case" image uploads...

As an example, I'm about to be out of town for all but one day of the next two weeks or so... Guess I'd better play it safe? (Multiply me by 100 other members, for whatever reasons...)

Nah, there's no way my "pastels" image will make top-10, I'm safe... Wait... "Random"? Oops....

They usually give you 48 hours to upload your image. If you are gone for one day, it shouldn't be a problem.

I am VERY new here (ummm, only ONE account) : P I even paid money to be here. (Seems that very few do that???) I've voted four challenges in their entirety, but my profile shows that I have voted "0" times with NO average vote. The system even showed me my summary of voting when I finished each challenge. Where's the justice in that? LOL.

I have entered one challenge w/photo I didn't even like that well, but it got me started. I received comments that folks took time to think of and also blips to the effect that it bored them. Fine. I don't know what their votes were, but the feedback was key. 240 votes, 16 comments (it really suk'd, lol) I never see eye-to-eye with everyone and when I vote it is purely my opinion on use of the theme and my likes/dislikes. I've seen great photos that I thought didn't have much to do with the challenge topic and did not score them quite as high for that reason (although my simple mind may be in the way). I don't mind having people see my votes as my opinion here is nada. I love the idea of the the 10.

That's the drawback, of course. But I have no idea how much the servers can handle. I would be willing to pay a few more dollars in my membership fee to support site upgrades if it reduced the number of DQs after the challenge ended and caught more during the challenge.

As far as your "pastels" image, please tell me you didn't go for a "Post-Apocalyptic" feel again... :)

Your votes won't show up in the "votes cast" stats on your profile until the challenge results are posted.

This is incredible!!!
I have never seen so many DQ's in 2 years I have been here as I have in the past month!!
Is it a pattern?

I looked up one of the DQ'ed fella's name 'Keeda'
Full name - Keeda Giri.

I will not be surprised to know that guy is from the Indian subcontinent. Why?

'keeda giri' is a slang for purposely creating miscief, in Hindi.

Maybe I am wrong..but it just rings some alarms.

Sorry, read it too fast. Well if I was gone that long, and I had a photo in that I didn't really want to be DQ'd, I would send it in for prevalidation. Maybe we should have a few more SC members to handle the load. I would nominate you, Bear_Music for the job. I think you would be great!

Hah! Thanks, I think... I really DO need the workload ;-)

As for the presubmission of originals, I definitely will do that; my point is I suspect a lot of people don't do it when they think their image is NOT going to place very hight AND is so obviously not manipulated that it's not going to raise any hackles re: validation... But if random checking becomes a fact of life, it may lead to a deluge of precautionary uploads.

I'm making a mental note already to upload my "pastels" original tomorrow night after I'm sure it's my final entry.

Makes perfect sense, 1% of the ones above you DQ'd, have to be nearly 20% of the ones above your 12th place shot :-)

Actually we are a community of strangers. I don't personally know anyone here. And feelings are readily hurt for some people. For some, it doesn't matter how many photos I give a 10 vote to. It only matters if it comes from a certain person. That's where the hurt feelings are going to come in with something like that. If you really are friends with someone here, then they shouldn't have any problem telling you what they voted on your entry after the voting.

You're right Eric. But, we are online friends! I've never met you, you've never met me. I plan on doing a bunch of commenting over the weekend and you'll be on the list!

What's happening to the account in question? Seems to be up and working normally.

So here's a crazy idea ripe for the dismissing -

Require everyone to upload their original upon submission. It doesn't get looked at except in the case of a validation request, and then is immediately purged from the system upon the conclusion of voting. Otherwise, the validation process remains as it is, no random sampling, no halfway points, etc. I'm thinking that just being forced to turn it over right off the bat would be some deterrent. Not a perfect solution, but sometimes preemptive measures work better than policing after the fact.

Geesh... At any given time there's usually 600 or more entries being voted on. If all the originals were RAW, that would be 3.6 gigabytes or so (impossible to know exactly) of additional uploading going on every week. I don't know if this is a problem, but it's a lot of storage.

Then as far as tossing the originals goes, you'd have to keep 'em long enough for after-the-challenge validation requests on perceived illegal procedures. So say you kept 'em for a month? That's what, 15 gigs of storage there?

And what about the dialup people, who have a hard enough time submitting as it is: how are they gonna like it if every time they submit they have to upload a large original, tying things up for what, half an hour? An hour? I don't know, I haven't used dialup in years, but...

These are just random thoughts, don't nail me on my math please :-)

It's not only a storage issue, but a bandwidth issue as well. The storage mightn't be all that expensive, but the bandwidth would be an ongoing additional expense -- and most of it would never be used.

This account is up and working and was disqualified once before for the same reason. I thought you lost your account or were banned?
09/01/2006 05:34:16 PM · #147
In cases of spot editing, you will be suspended from submitting to challenges for a while (depending on the number of infractions). You are banned for multiple accounts and what not.

OK, but both of this users' disqualifications are for score manipulation. I though that a single violation of this type was grounds for dismissal. Am I missing something here?

No one else wonders why this person still has an active account when they have two separate disqualifications for score manipulation?

Nope...
