Does it? I think leaving a 4 just says that you voted a 4 on that image, the knowledge of which would be worthless to me. At least if someone says "great lighting" then I know they thought that my light was good.
Anyway, this thread was for silhouette scores, and, to be fair, I don't really care that much about what you put in your comments. It's up to you after all. |

i see your point...but ya know when i got one as well (a "4" comment that is) i would have rather heard why cause it killed me quite a bit (droped my avg. that is) i was ticked untill i saw your post...then i thought ok its not his "cup of tea" fine he just doesn't care for what i did.....great.
next time tell me that with the 4...cause its not so clear. a 4 just tells me you voted a 4 it doesn't tell me why...and as ugly a reason as it might be i vote you go back and start taking the time to really present your opinion in a way that truly is a comment and not a 4......
i think that any of your "4" comments which i can imagen there are quite a few...should not in fact be counted as comments. cause if a commenters challenge were to come up and all i had did was tell ppl. what i voted them...there would be some mad ppl. at my heals telling me what i did was worce than copy and past........
really not cool dude....really not cool
next time don't tell me and leave you silent opinion speak when i hit the update button.

Why didn' t you wait till after the challenge and pm me?
I explain on my profile why I don't comment on 300 plus photos.
My comment is my vote. Now you know what I voted and if you feel so inclined you can talk to me about it. Is that more than you are willing to do for a photo you invested time into? If you don't care enough about what I think to do any investment of a PM...why are you passionate enough to discuss it in the forums?
Why am I willing to put my name, reputation and personal time on the line for you (who I don't even know) but you won't do the same back to me so we can learn together?
Doesn't seem equitable to me.

I dunno... posting a number seems just as fluffy as (and possibly more infuriating than) a standard fluff comment. I guess seeing "5" is just as useful as seeing "qumquat" - without a context, without a "why", it's meaningless, so I don't understand why it's useful to waste time posting it at all.
I personally don't care if hokie wants to sprinkle random numbers through his comments. I don't see that as trolling unless he's consistently posting "1" just to get a rise out of people. I don't have to mark it helpful, after all.

I lump that and the number into the same category. If you're going to state the obvious then don't bother leaving a comment, and if you're leaving a number then leave a reason as to WHY you left that particular number. Especially if you're someone who has a history in photography, has an eye for it and does rather well. Always nice to get comments - in depth comments that is from people who actually KNOW what they are looking at. |
I would argue the fact that my number vote, combined with the fact you know it is me, combined with the fact I have a note on my profile explaining myself would be enough to help those that really want discourse.
Without having time to comment on 300 plus photos. Whose do you suggest I comment on? The lowest and highest scoring? The Middle ones? The first 30 or so I vote on? The last 30?
Faced with over 300 photos to vote on and comment on, isn't it better to encourage the pasionate ones who care about photography as much as me to talk to me about their photo IF THEY CARE? Versus arbitrary comments on photos pulled out of a hat? |
Hokie, if you want to give a score and have that serve as a comment, then you should try to make it useful. I don't see it as such. Perhaps it would help if you did this for 1's, 2's, 3's and 9's and 10's, because it at least tells us you really like or hate it, but for the middle scores, it's not very informative.
Now if you were to qualify those--and use one of the voting scale scoring systems, the photographer might gain some insight from your comment. For example, if you use Ken's page to vote it produces something like:
Composition: 4 - Technical: 4 - Creativity: 7 - Appeal: 4 - Challenge: 7 - Overall Calculated Average Score: 5
Here's the page (Ken's) that can be used to vote like that.
Voting Frameset
That isn't much harder to do, and it gives the person some information about areas they might improve (in the future) to get a better score from you.

If I commented on someone having "nice lighting" (which I tend to do if I really like the lighting) (or great composition, as I admire their technique), and if that comment has offended any of you for some reason... i do apologize... i thought it was better to say something nice, than nothing at all... I never heard of people complaining about a nice comment.... but ok... whether you know your lighting was point on or not, the point of this website is to get opinions from other people... so if someone tells you its nice lighting at least there is validation on what you thought in the first place, no?
I dont know... if you dont want to hear what other people, then why bother submitting!!!
Just my opinion!
Edit: And whats wrong with a little fluff in our lives?? It's nice to be nice sometimes!

Jeanny,
This issue was if someone voted a "4" and then said "Nice lighting". This could construed as contradictory. The comment should reflect the score.
For this example, something along the lines of "Nice lighting, but I'd like to see the {fill-in-the-blank} cropped out. It's very distracting", or "Nice lighting, but the subject should not be exactly centered."
As you can see, these statements try to be politically correct (read: polite) by first being positive before offering the criticism.

SLOWLY creeping back to a 5.
Y'know, if I'd actually paid attention when setting the date on my camera I would have had a MUCH better picture. Will anyone give me credit on that?

So, I'm thinking, you guys are right, I messed up with the shot so I can't blame you for marking me down lol. However, the good news is I messed up with post processing and some of you like what I did! So, I'm thinking I won't get upset until I show you all the re-edited version after the challenge :) (I must get a better pnone for these pictures)
