I just discovered this feature in photoshop CS. Is it legal to use in basic or advanced editing? Anyone have any pointers or tips for using it? I played with it a bit and like the results. (you out there Bear?)

Yah.
It's an automation of the old shadow/highlight mask capability, with more bells and whistles. It's legal in both basic and advanced at this point, as far as I can tell.

Shadows/Highlights doesn't do anything a skilled PSer couldn't do with Curves or Levels, but it does it in a single step and makes adjusting the tweaks a breeze. I use it fairly often as an additional adjustment for images which have lots of shadows.
Be careful not to over do it. Adjusting the highlights especially, can result in severe halos. |
