Hmmm...now please don't take this as me being smart but are you trying to tell that this thread should be locked now since apparently nothing constructive is being discussed? Take that comment as me more playing devil's advocate. Just trying to get a little insight.

No. It's what happens when people start posting just to fill space, then it veers off course. One thing leads to another... :( |

No, I was actually being serious. I don't think threads should be locked unless there's a really good reason for it (as when Langdon locked the thread announcing the closing of a recurring account a few days back). Your original question here was about why threads are locked when in your perception they were just getting to the point. It's a valid question. Ben (konador) tried to answer it, and David (deapee) put in his thoughts in his own manner. You seem to be dealing with it seriously.
But many threads have a way of going down into posts that are barely understandable anymore, inside jokes, just sounds, whatever. Fine, you guys like that sort of stuff, suit yourselves. I think that stuff is not needed, and threads should "die a natural death".
Let me say this. I am not into policing. Never have been, never will be. I and the rest of SC are doing our best here, but I pretty much have had it with the insinuations of heavy-handedness and unfairness and whatever else. Yes, I'm touchy. That won't change. Ben (konador) locked the other thread because in his best estimation it had reached the point where it would be good to lock it. He was right. He offered to open it if anyone was interested in adding anything.
Anyway. I'm off my box and off to take a break from this place.

Me?? Take things seriously?? Sometimes, but I like to get down to some answers. I take that seriously. I'm not trying to be nosy just would like to know. Ya know...lock this thread, at this point let it become the 8th wonder of the world or let it die a natural death. I know I'm done.

This is a private organization not a public governed place of living. You have no right to free speech here. Anything and everything you write here can be edited, deleted, or hidden at the owners' wishes. If they so decide to appoint members in charge of editing, deleting, or otherwise hiding what people say, then it is their right to do so. This is their site, afterall. |
WOW...that was harsh. Have a offended you? I certainly didn't mean to. And it the government owns us too. I see that by the taxes I pay. |
How is that harsh? It's not offensive, in tone or content. It simply states the truth that is frequently overlooked here. Anything on DPC is here at the discretion of the site owners. FWIW, I think they are quite tolerant, but there is a line and it does get crossed.
If you want to post freely what is not tolerate elsewhere, you are free to start your own site. |

Originally posted by Konador: I'd read through the entire thread and the same points were being argued over and over again, becoming more and more combative. I locked the thread to stop it turning into a frag-fest. The SC are taking action so I felt until the solution is put into place, the topic could be rested to avoid more hurt feelings etc. |
Rather than lock thread, perhaps a subtle reminders to some of the more combative elements would be a-propos.
It is a rather sad comment that we as a collective cannot discuss issues without having the SC or even individual members of the SC close threads on what are seemingly whimsical reasons.
There was absolutely nothing resolved in the thread mentioned... other than the lip locking that existed between a very few individuals. While I can appreciate that this is NOT a democracy as some are so quick to point out, I would expect that civility would prevail, and sometimes I seriously doubt that it does.
This is but one man's opinion, but I am certain there are others.

Ok so maybe I'm not done. If you read how this thread started you would see that I was questioning why threads are locked so quickly. I know what the rules are here. No one needs to reiterate them to me and I have held within those rules. I haven't cursed, called anyone out and anything like that. All I have done is raised the question. The tone was harsh and I didn't say he was offensive, I asked if I offend him. I guess when that line gets crossed, threads are locked. I think the problem is that some people can't tolerate someone having a different opinion but I'm different than you seeing as I can tolerate your opinion. You sound as if I should leave DPC...I could be wrong. Well I'm not going anywhere and I'll state my opinion when and where I like, but at least I'll do it tactfully. Like I have said before, can't we just all get along??

You forgot part of that sentence. Kind of changes the context a bit. ;^) Here's the rest...

Leaving DPC or staying is your choice, I don't care either way in the least. I do think you would be silly to do so over such a trivial matter, but the choice is yours. I simply suggested that should you want to have the freedom to post your own views on the internet without them being at the discretion of the owners of DPC and their appointed monitors, the SC, you DO have at least one alternative.
The suggestion that I am somehow intolerant of your opinion is ludicrous. I can tolerate whatever opinion you have, mostly because I simply do not care what your opinion is and I recognize your right to have and form your own opinions, even if they are wrong.
You can state your opinion in whatever manner you like, I just don't think you have any place to complain when opinions or discussions are quashed by the powers that be, it shows a lack of understanding that these forums are NOT a free-for-all. |

You missed when I said I wasn't leaving. Enough said about that.
What I do think is that when there is a discussion and persons are trying to work things out and the "powers that be" squash the thread then nothing is resolved. I've seen it happen many times. I have not broken any rules and have been very civil about this thread. I have not said you are wrong but its apparent to you that you think that I am. After this, I'm asking SC to lock this thread because I think we should just agree to disagree.
