This is an issue that, from what I have been able to gather in this thread, is a Site problem involving many people. With that said I prefer to discuss such matters ON the site.
I'm glad that you (I Enjoy Ham) have been able to work out an agreement with Leroy that makes you both happy. However unless this was just a personal problem with Leroy (which again, if that's the case should have been handled privately) then I do not see how this issue has been resolved in any way shape or form.
Furthermore I do not see how having an online discussion with a few individuals in chat while YOU are available is going to solve the issue. I understand you started this thread but you started it as a problem with this SITE.
I don't see how anything has actually been resolved (unless this was an issue just between you and Leroy). |
ok, so let the site bring on any issues they have with me. What issues do you have, that leroy came into the chat seeking to speek with us. He took initiative and you didnt? if anyone protests the resolution that leroy has come up with like i said, i am more then happy to discuss it further with them and work it out.
-Dan |
I think the issue here is neither you or Leroy speak for the community at large. Also you saying it's "resolved" because a few people, Leroy included came to an understanding/agreement is to prove what some have hinted at, which is really this is just a private issue you and others had with Leroy and nobody else. If not then why else would you consider the matter resolved? There are several others that are very sexual in nature at this web site so I'm guessing maybe the real issue here is that he's a guy and well he isn't a super model? No offense Leroy. :P |
actually others have come to speek with us, and if you read my post before youll notice that we are still keeping this public, we were just stating that we resolved something with leroy, dont take it out on us that someone actually did something about the problem.

Perhaps. Much of what happens on Internet Forums as a whole is pointless drama.
Unfortunately it's very visible pointless drama. If you're wanting to maintain a site that has a good reputation in the wider world then you would need to be careful about what appears on the site, even in more obscure areas such as offtopic forum posts.
Doing a google search just now for dpchallenge doesn't bring up forum posts, so it looks like from that respect the site's profile isn't damaged, but I'd say, as a relative newcomer here, that the forums do seem to be balanced on a fine edge just now between being useful - which was one of the reasons I decided to join this site - and being a playground, or an extension of Private Messaging.
If the forums as a whole fall over that edge into the realms of useless rubbish, then the site could potentially lose new members, which is, obviously, bad.
What to do about it though? Clearly real people inhabit these forums, so to cull off banter completely is never really going to work. I like Bear's suggestion of splitting off the front-page forum activity boxes so that useful photography threads always stay further up than general discussion stuff. That could be a start.
I'd also suggest that maybe the forums themselves could use a "waste time" forum - similar to general discussion, yes, but for more trivial threads to live in. It works in other forums that I belong to and keeps the more focused areas free of less productive subjects.
Aside from that, it's down to the members themselves to police themselves. Ask yourselves how this might look to a newcomer? Is it massively clique? Are you just sending forum posts back and forth between yourself and one other person? If so what you're saying probably belongs in a chatroom or a set of PMs, because it's massively unlikely that it has any wider appeal.
That's my 2p worth. |

The thing is, this forum isn't bad at all....as a matter of fact this is one of the most calm and well mannered forums I've ever been a part of. Just take a look at some of the biggest forums on the net, the majority of their posts and members are from the "General Discussion" section.
There's only so much that can be said about photography, yet there's an unlimited amount of things to say about life...
Just let it happen, baby.

I've intentionally been away from DPC for about a week and plan (with the exception of these instances in which I can't contain myself) to stay that way. This isn't a "boohoo, look at me quit and feel sorry for me" post...it's just to say add me to the list of squeaky wheels.
I've been at DPC for a long time. I've seen it through many stages. I've always been a proponent of off-topic conversation, although not being privvy to the SC threads, you might not see that. But for me, recently, DPC has gotten so ridiculous that it's not even worth my time anymore. It's not that there are worthwhile yet off-topic threads. It's that people can't seem to help themselves from posting just for the sake of posting. It's that people can't seem to find the line and stay on the proper side of it. I just don't understand it. Threads like "pillow fight" and "off topic" aren't promoting social activity - a good number of the posts in those threads don't even contain real words. I don't understand the need to have these sorts of conversations "immortalized" on a photography site and why they can't take place in private, the way many of us conduct our nonsensical and competely-uninteresting-to the-general-public conversations.
Likewise, I'm absolutely not a prude. But honestly, I can only stomach so much discussion about whips and leather and who blatently wishes they were banging whom. Why does this have to be so prevalent in the forums? And not just in their own threads (of which there are many), but in any thread that happens to pop to the top when a certain group of people are online. I just see absolutely no reason why this needs to be conducted in public.
I am all for informative, interesting, off-topic threads. But these, I just don't understand.
And I completely understand that my post and my opinion don't change a single thing. I've mentioned before, as politely as my crusty self can muster, that this sort of degeneration has been bothering me, only to be mocked. I'm aware that our opinions mean little and that unless the SC essentially comes in with brute force, our requests won't be honored. But I know that the ones who have spoken up here aren't nearly the number who have been bothered by this so I just wanted to add another name to the list of those who have. Good luck to everyone in finding a suitable balance. |
mk has said things more succinctly than I ever could.
Add me to the list of squeaky wheels. 2 years ago, we had fun, off-topic, casual threads too.. but it was never .. *bad*.. like it is today.

i don't have time to read all this, so pardon if this has been suggested, but what about a
Way Off Topic forum group, where all the silliness can live without cluttering the general discussions that do contribute to the community, even if they aren't necessarily community related? it could live right next to rant, but be a lot easier to keep out of site, rather than having to open up each thread to ignore it... |

a way off topic thread.. that would have to be added like rants... would be better than it is now... the sexual stuff needs to be taken to a different place tho... there are chat rooms, msn chat rooms, and yahoo chat rooms that are better for the sexual stuff

A resounding "Amen" to MK's post and Artyste's quote of it above. My views exactly, just adding my name to the list. Coming up on my 3 year anniversary here and I can definitely see a change in the forums and it's not a particularly good change. But I suppose change is inevitable, cycles happen and people come and people go. I won't be going because I love the challenges and the photography and a lot of the people here, but my forum time and enjoyment of it has definitely decreased.

If you don't like whats on TV do you not change the channel??? Why not ban porn from TV as well??? I would vote for removing the people under 19 before changing this site. If it offends you then use the ignore feature or report post feature and move on. Wait until you get older and see whats really instore for you if you open your mind and eyes.

I think all that there is to be said has been said, so I am going to lock this thread before it degenerates. The SC is aware of the feelings of both sets of users, and is working (using many suggestions from this thread) to come up with a solution to best benefit both sides of this thread, and DPC as a whole.
