I'd like to leave the plant in colour but make the rest black and white.

Can anyone suggest how this is done in Photoshop?

Thanks.

This is probably not the easiest or the best way but...

* make a copy of the layer
+ turn the copied layer into black & white through a layer effect (e.g. desaturate the colours via Hue & Saturation or use Channel Mixer to render to grayscale
* using the mask that came with the layer effect, paint through the mask to reveal the colours in the layer (i.e. layer you copied from) below

Since there is no color around the plant it makes this one easy.
1. lasso tool around plant
2. Select > invert
3. Image > Adjustments > Desaturate

Thanks so much for the advice. I'm posting the re-edited image shortly.
