ROFL! They still have that here in Taiwan. Not always though..

They have these HUGE parades with firecrackers, drums and music (karaoke) and paid wailers and often bikini clad girls with a booth. Usually housing a full-on stripper if the person was important enough.

The strippers don't usually happen in Taipei, so I'm sure I'll see more after I move next week.

It's a helluva racket and it totally disrupts traffic, but it's part of their view on death.

Would that mean that sex is the opposite of death? I don't really know.

If the person was really, really important, there can be as many as 50 cars and it can disrupt traffic for more than half an hour.

The more important the person, the more auspicious of a date they must choose according to Chinese traditional numerology. On such days, there are often a few happening in one day.

I've seen some where the person was deceased for years before they get just the right day.

Thanks for the insight Keiran;)

When I lived in Singapore, I noticed one day that a new coffee shop (ie restaurant) was opening on the corner. It took 5 days of refurbishment to set it up and when the normal floral bouquets were lined up outside we knew it was officially open.

So my husband and I get ready and go to this place. We sit down at one of the many tables outside and get really strange looks from the people there...after a few minutes and after looking a little closer we realised it was a huge Chinese funeral....we left as quickly as we could;)
