Well, after shipping my 20D and/or 70-200mm to Canon 5 times they finally decided to replace my camera. But I've been waiting for a couple weeks now as the battery grips were on back-order.
So today I got a replacement 20D, 70-200mm IS f/2.8 and battery grip. I am excited, in that I haven't been able to take photos since July. And the fact that for most of the past year my camera has been in the shop more than in my hands.
So yea!!!
I did get a couple fringe benefits out of the whole deal. I know have two battery chargers (this is good), and an extra strap *shrug* and I think I got my Canon lens cover back. (One of the times I shipped my stuff to Canon they sent my lens back with a Tokina cover.) Looks like I got another year on my warranty too!
I haven't tried it out yet as I am at work. One thing I noticed that did bother me was that there is a small piece of lint "under" the viewscreen. Go figure.... Not sure if these are new or refurbished. Probably the latter.
So the real question:
Do I start shooting with the new equipment? or sell the new equipment and buy a Nikon body and 70-200mm VR?

Depends on how disgruntled you are with Canon and whether you believe Nikon service is any better than Canon. |

i dunno. go feel the d200.
i know that i would stick with canon through thick an thin because of their pro options, AND it looks like my 30d survived the rain with absolutely no problems. depends where you plan on going with phortography. Now that you mention it, i need to get out and shoot more.
edit: you could always go on a shopping spree and become a canon pro. I've heard their service is amazing! ; )

I don't know how this myth propagates. But Canon Pro has little to do with the equipment you own. I already own some pro equipment.
Canon Pro is based on you making over 50% of your income via photography and making over a certain amount. Then having Pro equipment. |

| I think you should wait and see what's coming out at Photokina at the end of September and then make your decision as to what you want to do. Whatever will be announced will probably not be out on the shelves for a few months, or not until the spring of '07, so bear that in mind. Plus, if you do decide to go with something newer, you could sell your 20D immediately and in the meantime pick something up off of Ebay dirt cheap to hold you over. Oly E-20s are going for cheap and have a good resale value. Or, you may want to keep it even after you get your new camera, as they have some features that most other DSLRs don't (silent shutter, no max on flash synch speed). Just a thought. I know you must be very frustrated with your Canon experience. :( |

Dude, I am REALLY glad for you. I often think back on your difficulties and wonder how things are going for ya.
I think you should go out and shoot for a bit. I'd consider going down to the local shop and asking them to remove the lint though. Shouldn't take them long...
Tongue firmly in cheek, but still might be worth an ask... Demand that they do it while you wait. They should know you by now :).
I demanded professional level service at my local Canon shop and actually had a job to go and do (politely and firmly). After that, they remember me and have given me good service. I bend when it is reasonable, but I think they are ready to be fair with me at this point.
I agree with Olyuzi though. Check photokina.
I think that you will be somewhat disappointed by the D200 and 70-200VR. Not because of anything related to do with quality. I don't think there is anything wrong with that combination, I just think that you will be in exactly the same position, but less a modest amount of cash...
Your equipment either works or it doesn't. Both companies are capable of bad and good service. Luck of the draw I'm afraid. |

You mean a retailer shop? I just moved to a new state I don't think there are many authorized repair shops in the area. Heck, there was only one shop that really sold a full range of Camera equipment where I used to live. |

No, Taipei has an authorized repair shop.
I will move to TaiZhong in a few days and they have the factory there... :) SCORE! :) |
