Heyall, got a film camera from almost out of thin air. My uncle bought it for my pop in Japan sometime in the 80's and it (and the lenses) have only been out of the box once. I took my first roll of film today! Anyone else have this camera? It has really great features, even as good as my new 30D. I admittedly know zilch about film cameras but I sure do dig this one.

Peace from the east,

My mom has had one since the mid 80's and she still shoots with it to this day. Its a very good camera and does really well. I used it sometimes when I needed a long lens before I went to a dslr and it does very well. Lens can still be had for it and its durable as all get out.

My dad just bought it from my pop who was going to sell it on Ebay or something..it came with:

100-200 F4.5
49mm
28mm F2.8
and a Minolta Maxxum 2800 AF flash

I just had no idea (being just a baby in the 80's) that they made such great cameras back then. I was expeciting it to have like...a crank on the side or something :-) ..sort of kidding! I guess I shouldn't be so impressed without having seen any of the shots I took yet.

In 1978 I bought a Minolta XG7 (older but similar to the 7000) and I used it till early 2000, when it finally died. It was a great camera. After it died, I made the move to digital, first with P&S and recently to DSLR

If I'm not mistaken, Minolta was *the first* out with an auto-focus system, and it worked darn well. Amazing technology for the time.

LOL that's what I said. I had to get my dad to put it in. *blush*

The lenses and the mirror (?? I think) are really dusty/linty that I can't seem to get clean, in fact I think I've made it worse.

I actually had a Pentax autofocus camera earlier than that - the autofocus motor was actually in the lens. The ME-F, I think. I sold it after my big overseas trip in 1984 because I had purchased a Canon AE-1 Program in Hong Kong.

Now the problem with film is, it's still expensive. I took two slide films on Saturday and had them processed - and chose some frames to do large prints of, and prints from slides are way more expensive than prints from negatives of the same size.
