My fuel tank storage shed has been taken over by a colony of hornets. I am totally phobic when it comes to any type bee/hornet/wasp. For the past few weeks I have had to walk around the far side of my garage to get into my house as these damn hornets chase acfter you if you walk along their side of the garage. Well damn it I've had enough! I'm taking back my fuel tank shed! Tomorrow I have an exterminator coming to destroy thie happy little habitat. mwahahahahahaha

this shot was taken with the Bigma at 500mm....

Wow, big nest. Be very careful until the exterminator get rid of them. They get very agitated with vibration. You can be walking out of their way and still aggravate them by talking, humming, using mower, or anything that vibrates. And take it from someone that has been hit by one (and just one) of those guys, you will drop to your knees in pain. I could not even image two, three, or more stings...OUCH!

Yeah, those things are mean.

When I was a kid I hit a hive about that big with a stick... got about 80 stings for my trouble.

After a visit to the ER and a good nights sleep I came back the next day for revenge and carefully observed the hive for a while. After determining all the wasps were coming out of a single hole I formed a battle-plan and got the garden hose. Sneaking up to the hive ninja style I deftly plugged the hole with the business end of the hose and let 'er rip. About 5 seconds later I realised they had an emergency exit and got rewarded with 40-50 more stings and a second trip to the ER.

On the ride home I was thinking about a couple M80's I had stashed away and decided that demolition was probably my best bet.

Sadly I never got a chance to settle the score (or some might say luckily), I got home and was crushed to find my dad had sprayed the hive in gasoline and torched it.

One of these days though... ;-)

Just seeing that gives me the chills. I'm SO scared of bees, particularly hornets. Glad to hear it'll be gone soon!!

OMG - that's both scarey and funny. I can just picture you watering the hive and them zipping out another hole.
The exterminator told me how he is doing this....first soak the hive gently in poison spray. Then, turn up the power 15 minutes later and let her rip - demolitioning the hive with high powered poison spray.
I will be hiding inside during this event.

Common SP, throw on some jeans and long sleeve shirt just in case and camp out a good distance away with the Bigma and get us some action shots!

Poison is a lot more effective than a garden hose and they probably won't be able to put up much of a fight...

No way....I was shaking for 15 minutes after I took the shot here, and they weren't even pissed off yet. Plus, the guy is coming around 6 am to try and catch them when it's still cool outside and they're less active. I'll watch from inside the house

Beaautiful nest! Definitely be careful about going near with anything that makes very loud noise or would cause shock/vibration in the shed. Last year I bumped into a structure on my property with my garden tractor and got swarmed. They nailed me about a dozen times before I got away and swatted the stragglers!

last summer, my son was stung 4 times by wasps that were building a nest under the swing. he was about 19 months old at the time, and probably my worst moment as a dad.

daddy got revenge :

Heh. I got hit by swarms a few times as a kid. I used to visit my cousins a lot and they lived next to a big forest. Didn't even see one nest until it was too late. Got one sting right next to my eye and the damned bee couldn't pull out. My uncle came to the rescue.

Hey kudzu. Those pics are great. Ever think about giving them a grunge treatment with some modest vignetting? It would complement the 'revenge' aspect a lot IMHO.

Count. I bet the look on your face was nothing short of priceless when you did the water hose trick and realized your folly :).

I got hit a few weeks back. I was sneaking up on a nest, camera in hand, and got to within about six feet when they came at me. I was stung on the head and face several times, and a couple of times on the wrist.

The only picture I got is a blur.

That's the last time I'll do that.

This guy...

...didn't appreciate me interrupting his dinner. Working distance, about 5 inches.

I say save the money on the exterminator and just torch the building. It'll give the Fire Department something to do and you can toast marshmellows at the same time. *grin*

I got closer than I prefer to while taking this shot.

Yeah, I imagine it was had anyone been watching besides maybe the queen bee. I'm sure she got a good chuckle out of it though... haha.

We had a basketball sized bald-faced hornets nest in one of magnolia trees - couldn't mow the yard in that area.

I decided to spray the nest with one of those cans that goes 20 feet or so, but I did wait until after dark. I put on coveralls, gloves, a mosquito headnet, taped my cuffs (wrist and ankles) and went out with a flashlight. I was quite a sight...kids thought it was funny. Was nervous about using the light, but had to see the main entrance hole. I soaked the heck out of that nest and ran like a rabbit. ;^)

The next day, for good measure, I took the 12-gauge shotgun and proceeded to knock it out of the tree with a few rounds. It's good living out in the country! He-he.

I hate mean, nasty hornets! Can you tell?

I had a huge wasp nest in the composter. Just sprayed the entrance after dark and voila, no more wasps. (except a few in the house, sprayed those individually) Not much fight in them when hit with RAID.

I'm not scared of bees, or wasp. I remember a friend that had some bee hives, he was a bee keeper. He suited me up from head to toe in a bee suit and we went down to the nest. He had his smoker and he opened up the nest. the next thing I knew there were about 5000 bees on us and flying around us. What he failed to tell me was where where the sleeves go up your arm and ties the bees will get there and sting through your shirt. I came away with about 40 stings and he was covered. His thrill was to see who got stung the most when we went back in the shed to take of the bee suits. I wanted to kick his butt. He just used a little liquor to drink the hurt away like it was nothing.

By the way some of you may say why didn't you run. You don't run on wave your arms when you have stirred up a nest the will follow with stinger ready.

No hornets, I will do anything to get out of there way. Those guys hurt.
