A few asked, most probably don't care, but I figured I'd give a little more info on my fire entry.

Our town is growing like crazy lately. Kohls and Target are moving in and in order to do that they needed to get rid of the old, out of business outlet mall called (ironically) "The Outlet Village".

The fire department saw this as a great opportunity to practice on large structural fires - so decided to burn the place down! I just couldn't pass that opportunity up (especially since it was during the week of the fire challenge - what are the odds!)

It was a HUGE single story set of buildings. For those that wondered, no one was hurt. I really wanted to get some pictures of firemen being all dramatic but I really didn't see them doing much of anything but standing around looking bored. A few had little point and shoots and were taking pictures. My heroes :(

Anyway, I took over 500 shots - here's a few more just for fun.

Thanks everyone who voted. This was my actual entry:

My goal was really to beat my last entry but then I thought I wasn't going to do that since it was mid 5s all week so I reset my goal to keep my average above 6. In the end it was .001 lower than my last challenge and my average is still above 6 so I'm happy.

PLEASE let me know what you didn't like or what you thought was mediocre about the shot. Positive comments are nice but constructive comments are EXCELLENT. And I'm not a big baby so feel free to word it however you want.

Thanks again!

So was the whole town out there watching?

That really was a fabulous shot, and an awesome catch, and I'm surprised it didn't do better.

Not as many people as I would have expected. They did it over 2 days. The first night they did a small building and I got there a little late, there were mabe 6 other people there.

The shots you see were from a Friday and they started it around 5. No holds barred this time - they were burning the whole thing down. I'd say there were probably 50-75 people gathered around. Lots of people taking pictures with their cell phones. I actually felt like a bit of a celebrity, people saw me with my bag and big old SLR and must have assumed I was an official some sort of thing or another because they all got out of my way and were giving me tips on where "the real action" was at.

Well, I thought it was friggin awesome! Thanks for posting the story! Now I know what I want to do with my life. Burning down malls - I wonder if there are any open positions? Ah, heck with it, I'll just freelance and maybe burn a few for free just to attract business. Wish me luck!

If you burn down the malls, where will you go when the zombies roam the land?

Dang - you're right. Better to keep them contained. :)

I noticed the other day you only had entered one challenge before. I wish I commented during the challenge so I could be part of history. :P

Seriously, I liked it and scored it a 7. I think you did a good job of exposing this. Probably it's weakest aspect is it doesn't have one thing that grabs your attention. The large flame on the left would serve that purpose but it's so far off to the side it shies away from that attention.

You could always just hand them torches and call them employees.

A thought to the environment then?
No one thought of that?

First thing that came to mind when I saw the post...isn't that alot of pollution that could have been avoided by tearing it down instead? Of course, then you fill up some landfill somewhere - 6 of one, 1/2 dozen of the other, pick one.

As for the challenge entry, I agree with yanko to some degree in that there isn't a strong subject or focal point within the image. The remains of the building in the foreground I suppose, but not strong. One thing that looked to have potential is the pool of water in the front left - that could have maybe played a larger role in this shot with a move to the left when framing and picking up more reflections?
