My father in law has a few photos of this snake taken in northern Quebec somewhere near Raddison, but hasn't been able to figure out which species it is. Can anyone help? Thanks!

Garter Snake.
Couldn't tell you what specific kind though... maybe common, or San Francisco. |

rat snake? not sure, though
there are many kinds, and their heads look similar

From what I know, this would be a "Rat Snake". |
unless there's a species of Rat Snake that I'm unaware of (completely possible) I'd stick with "Garter" on this. The head is very characteristic of Garters, including the large eye in comparison with Rat Snakes. The dorsal stripe and continuous, light-colored band on lower body is also very typically Garter Snake. It does have a thicker body than I'd normally expect for a Garter though. Could just be very well fed. |
