Here's a shot from my recent trip to Acadia in Maine.
I guess this is considered a Free Study outtake, but I really like this shot and the editing I did to it.
Please let me know what you think! Feedback is appreciated.
Here is the original:
Thanks!

My Free Study shot is nothing like this one -- this was just taken this month and I won't be submitting it. |

So it's not an outtake? Heheh.
The edit is way over-processed imo. The original is a bit drab and needs some contrast, but the edit is the oppossite extreme and looks very unnatural. I would tone down the colors for sure and be careful not to make it look like sunshine on the beach when the sky in the background looks all dark and stormy. |

That's a fascinating approach to PP on this shot. Like routerguy says, it's totally not real looking. But that doesn't have to be your criterion if you don't want it to be. I quite like the approach youi have taken here. For me it's a little too bright, and the sky is a little too blue. I'd darken it a bit, make the sky more neutral, and do some gradients/vignetting to add depth to foreground. Something in this direction:
That's just a quickie, done off your edited version, but see what you think.

Thanks, Bear.
I see what you mean by it being a bit bright, but I look at your edit, and if I had never seen the original I would deem that one too dark -- so maybe I need to find a happy medium between the two.
I like having more detail in the trees, so I would probably leave those alone but maybe darken the sand. Luckily, I saved it as a PSD and have all my layers preserved. I did different levels adjustments on the sand, water, mountains/trees, and skies so doing that type of thing should not be too hard.
I'll give it a go.
Thanks,

Yeah like Bear says it's pretty much a matter of taste. I prefer black and white photos so figure that out lol. |
