Short of being in the pits, what is the best place to sit for a NASCAR race (for pictures, that is)? There's a race in Dover, DE on September 24 that I might try to go to. I'm not really big into NASCAR, but I've never taken pictures of a race and it seems like it'd be a good challenge.
The seating chart can be found here. My guess is that any seat would be fine, but let me know if I'm wrong.

Think the Front Stretch would be Cool,Could get some action coming out of four and also shots of the cars in the pits. along with the victory celebration, but im sure they would be sold out.
After that i would think the turns could produce some nice shots.
also as high as you can get more view and also not shooting thru fences.
Its been awhile since Ive been to dover and know the stands are steep as is the track on where if their is any better angle.
Some Pocono Infield shots

I agree that along the front stretch is best. I've gotten some decent shots from there in the past at Pocono.
I'll be at the Dover race also, but I think we're sitting near one of the turns. Not sure exactly where, my friend has the tickets. I'm looking forward to it! :) |

It may seem unorthodox but I'm gonna suggest right dead in the middle of the track with the cars headed towards you. Depth of Field will be a bitch but you should get some killer shots.
Seriously I know a photog down in ATL that shoots some NASCAR events and I think he tends to setup on one of the stretches (front, back?) and he shoots from somewhere in the infield so that he has the wall in the background. Its easier to track the cars that way I guess. One of the drawbacks (for me) was that the pics I saw were of the cars from the side but not as much of the car (paint & logos) as I might want to see. He does have a cool shot of a wreck, though (I hope no one was hurt in it but don't remember if I've ever asked or if I just forgot his answer).

I do like NASCAR, but I think that there are better images to be had out in the parking lot than inside the race itself. Camp the night before and watch the natives put on one hell of a show for you. That's where the best pics are.

if you want to have fun, first, have reasonable expectations.
since the cup race is a reserved seating event that is probably sold out, you aren't going to be moving around a whole lot, unless you're walking around the track. if you go to the busch race, you might have a little more flexibility in the grandstands. regardless of which race you're at, though, if you're walking around the fence, you WILL be hustled along. the track has a ton of security people down there to keep people from standing alongside the fence. i spent a few years shooting through the fence and getting chased by cops, and managed to get a few decent shots, like this one:
on the other hand, to echo eric, the race is really just a small part of the whole event. when nascar comes to town, it is a HUGE spectacle, very much like the state fair, except there aren't as many rides. it is a great place to shoot people, to say the least. here are some i shot as a fan at the daytona 500.
if you enjoy it enough, who knows, maybe you'll work your way up to having access to shooting stuff like this ;-)
you might consider getting one of the monster mile motorsport packages. you get to see a lot more than what you would just being in the parking lot and in the grandstands, including a tour of the track, and probably pit road, as well.
have fun, and be sure to post up some shots!
