I am looking into a backpack for my camera stuff...I used the Canon backpack the other day and I was so underwhelmed but its comfort level...that backpack does not fit me well at all.
I need something with a nice padded hip belt so the weight of my load is not pulling on my neck and shoulders all day.
I have done a lot of online research and have come up with the Lowepro Rover or the Lowepro Rover Plus...can't decide if the plus is too big.
Anyone have any experience with these or recommend another model... I like the idea of having a top compartment for extra stuff like food, jacket, glasses, etc. |

Buy the plus, and if its too big you can always buy some more gear to fill it up LOL.
Seriously, how much gear do you have? I would suggest you get a bag that has plenty of room for additions to your gear |

| Tons of threads about this topic, so a search would help you, but my best bag is Tamrac Adventure 9. |

I have had both, for your size the Rover is plenty.

I read all the threads that I could find but I wanted to hear about personal experiences with these bags since I am specifically looking for a bag with a nice hip belt... ;-)
Is the hip belt on that Tamrac really comfortable and take the load off the shoulders?
The Canon backpack I have has a lame hip belt but it really is more like a chest belt...it is worthless!

Do you mean my size as a woman? Or do you mean for the camera equipment I have? Is the size difference considerable between the 2?

Well. I mean both, I think.....
I carry a D200, 200-70, 12-24, 18-70, 105, SB800 plus a bunch of other stuff, every where. The plus is to much, it hurts my back. I carry this thing like a man purse, a least that is what my wife calls it. The more room I have the more stuff I carry. My back hurts, plus you are much smaller than me.

You must be a big guy ;-) I am 5'9" and that is not too small for a woman.
I just want to make sure that when I hike in the Eastern Sierras that I will have enough room for water, food, jacket and misc hiking needs.
I'd take my 350D + 2-3 lenses not much else. |

See if you can find some place local that has the Rover and check it out, it should be plenty. I sold one of my friends, 6 something, not afraid of a big meal, on the Plus and when it arrived he wanted to trade for my Rover. I took the deal because it held my 70 -200.

It does.. it's not the size of the belt on, for example, the AW Trekker, but I carry a D200 plus grip, the large 17-55 lens, three other lenses, and other gear, and it's very comfortable. Best bag I've owned. |

Well, the in town camera shops are not that great so I had to drive to 2 different places 30-45 minutes away to look at these packs...I ended up with the Rover AW. The plus model was tempting only because of the harness but it is considerably bigger than the plain model...just way too bulky.
On a side note, I found an awesome camera shop that has excellent prices. The only problem is tax but I got a 70-200L f/4 (on impulse hehehe) for about the same price as online through B&H...just a few bucks more. Actually, if I opted for faster shipping through B&H, the lens would have cost the same amount....What a relief to find a local camera store that is competitive with online stores. They also have a website: Canogacamera.com and the online pricing was the same as in store pricing...I was really surprised at that. I expected high pressure and high prices.
No pressure, no hassles, large inventory but NO RETURNS ;-) I guess I am just gonna have to keep my new L :P |
