Will the CCDs ever get so big that you dont even need optics? like if the CCDs were so big that all you need to use is digital zoom?

Like on back to the future, his binoculars were just 2 CCDs and they used digital zoom (my guess lol)

You're always going to need some sort of lens to focus the light. So, that fictional technlogy just isn't practical.

In our lifetime, maybe. CCD is the wrong question. But lens is the right direction. We'll one day download our images right from the brain. Of course, we'll be able to upload them too! ;)

I have seen some interesting optics development using liquid instead. Im no physicist, but from what i understand, you can change the focal length in these lenses with an electrical current to bend the light into focus. This would make lenses tiny, and they plan to use them on camera phones and stuff. Pretty sweet, huh?

So if the CCD was like 2" it wouldnt work? what if the CCD had a curved lens mounted to it?

How do cell phones work? they dont have lenses in them. They have a zoom but there are no optics so how is that working?

The CCD has to have what 1 lens?

They have optics. Usually it's just a little 1-element lens pretty close to the sensor, with a fixed focal length, aperture and distance as far as I know. Users of cell phone cameras typically don't care about quality, so they're psyched about digital zoom.

I think in a few years you'll get disposable 10MP cameras. You go to a vending machine, get a cam with a 1GB card, use it, open it up, get the card and then just throw away the cam. That would be cool hehe.... Of course it will have a normal lens so nothing fancy ;-)

You have to have a lens to focus the light, otherwise you'll get light coming from all directions and just creating a mess. A cellphone camera has a lens similar to one you would find on a disposable camera.
