I have a friend who is in the market for a decent digital PnS. He said he doesn't want to spend more than $300 US But I personally think I can talk him into spending a little more for the right camera... So just between us, Lets say he is willing to spend $400 instead.

He is looking for something with a bit of zoom. at least 5x optical or greater

Any Suggestions?

umm, you might want to refer to it as a p + s - - 'select a pns' sounds like something madeline kahn did in history of the world, part I.

Canon Powershot S3 IS. Lots of zoom, manual controls, great image quality, and less than $400 shipped.

I'm not trying to blatantly promote myself here, but I am currently selling an Olympus C-770 on ebay. Probably won't go for more than 250, though I hope so.

It has been a great camera for me, I'm just getting funding for an upgrade. I will blatantly point out that the lens cap is missing. But it is a 10x optical with full manual controls. See my profile for example shots if you like.

If you are interested, I will send you an ebay link. Just PM me.

This is sort of ironic My friend ordered a S3 IS about 2 minutes after I bumped this thread. Glad to see I didn't send him in the wrong direction Because I sort of pushed him to buy this camera based on what I have read about it online. I have never looked at one close up.
thanks for the advice. Now I have to talk him out of buying a bunch of elcheapo memory cards.

Cool, now you just have to convince him to join DPC and start showing off. :)

Even though I am partial to Canon this is my first choice for a point shoot in that price range... Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7

With a good, brand name 150x 2GB card going for $35, there's no reason to buy generic.

You haven't met my friend. He has been buying this digital camera for about 3 years now. Took that long to open his wallet. But I think he is going to go to Best Buy tomorrow and pick up a Sandisk Ultra 2 so he should be ok

A slower card, and he'll probably pay twice as much, but he'll be happy. :-/

As a Powershot S2 IS user, I've been very happy with it. The only thing I'd reallllllly like to have is a hotshoe instead of the onboard flash.
