is the blue thing up front too distracting?

I think the blue is distracting, much prefer the bottom pic. The bottom picture would have even more impact if you cropped like so:

I need to be more original like that. I always think in terms of the traditional 5x7 framing.

Yep. This is a non-decision decision. ;^) Bottom photo for sure and the crop by cerebis is cool too!

Noticed some vignetting in the top photo...using a lens attachment of some sort?

As colourful and pleasant the pics are I think in both pics the obvious subject, the little girl, is coming second, she must be the main subject of the focus and the rest secondary and more out of focus.
IMHO.

The blue handle could have worked if it had been used as a frame. Since it leaves the image at the top and on the right, it is a distractor from the primary subject.

My favorite color is blue, but maybe you can "paint it black...".
Then add a White Title/Poem in the black part.

I like the subject at a steeper angle, maybe with the sky as her background.
