I remember those baggie/buggie comments and I did get a few maybe that was it.

In the two pictures shown, the number is correct. There is a comment hidden on each, for one reason or the other. . ..

Okay you have me curious now. Without prying too much can you let me know if they are hidden by SC? And were they baggie comments?

Wouldn’t it be better to just delete them rather then have the confusion.

Edit: Doesn't explain the third one.

yes. Only admins and SC can hide or delete comments. I'm not sure how it shows up if you make a comment and then go back to delete it.

yes

Actually no. If we delete them, they are gone "forever" unless Langdon can work somekind of designer/programmer magic. By hiding them, we can still see them, in case we need them for future reference. The same is true for the posts that happen every now and then that we deem necessary to "hide." To the user they are "deleted," but to us we can still see them.

It probably does, I just didn't take the time to look. (edit -- looked. yes

Karmat (or any SC), could you please explain why you hide comments?

I mean, the "Great Job" thing isn't worth hiding, I'd think.

Is someone running around leaving obscenities on everyone's account?

Also, I'd like to suggest that you offer to let people see what it was you're hiding. It feels a little bit like I'm a kindergartner, not allowed by those in the know to see bad language.

Most of the time, the only reason they get hidden is if they violate the site Terms of Service (ToS). On occasion we will hide a series of cut/paste comments. In these cases, it's not that the content was objectionable, it's that leaving the exact same wording, hundreds of times without any additional elaboration, adds no value. If lots of folks did this, it would clutter up the system badly. It also inflates the "comments given" statistic, for whatever that's worth.
There are a few other (rare) instances where we've hidden something that was neither a ToS violation nor part of a cut/paste campaign. Mainly, these last few have been at the request of the owner of the photo commented on.
All in all, we take a very conservative approach and consider carefully before hiding comments.
Making "hidden" comments visible would defeat the purpose, and publically posting content would be both time consuming and tantamount to publically "calling out" the author.
In summary, rest assured that the sole purpose of hiding comments is to maintain the comment system as a valuable resource for civil discourse.

Thanks, Kirbic.

I didn't mean to post them publicly. I just meant that if you hide a comment, you send a PM to the recipient to ask whether they'd like to know what you hid.

Clearly, though, if you're hiding massive copies of the same comment, that's not practical.

Putting on my observer hat, I think the fact that several of us noticed the count discrepancy pretty clearly indicates how much we cherish comments! Just in case anyone somehow didn't know that. :)

This particular comment was given (I think) 1500 times so to contact each person would have been monumental, to say the least.
