Recently, I have been getting more and more interested in doing portraits. Seeing as some of the members of this site do portraiture that simply blows me away, I was wondering if any of you can point me in the direction of some good portraite taking tips on the web?

The Idnator has a portrait lighting thread going on.

She's smart.

If what you're doing is *wrong* I can't wait to see 'right'!

Keep pointing the camera at yourself and you can't go wrong :-)

Work your subjects. All the lighting in the world won't do a thing if you can't capture a genuine emotion. Figure out how to connect with them and make it personal.

And sometimes that's at lot harder than others.

I've had a couple of brides that I couldn't have shot a bad picture of them if I had tried. They were beautiful. They knew how to hold themselves (one had taken ballet all her life). They were very personable with or without a camera pointing their way.

Then there was the couple I shot the other day (not the ones I posted in the Engagement thread just a few minutes ago, another couple) - they were SO STIFF in front of the camera. I worked with them. Tried to make them comfortable. At times they were. Then they'd stiffen right back up again.

Some day I'm gonna be good at this! (I hope)
