Hello,

I am looking at taking a local class in photography to get a better grasp on the technical and mechanical aspects of photography. I currently apprentice with a Wedding Photographer, but it can be difficult to get a solid understanding of these things. I also want to be confident enough to do a wider range of photography than I am currently capable of, so that I can use it as a vocational skill to support my family in the future.

I have looked quite a bit around at the area schools. The local community college is all film based and sounds like it might not be the best option. Western Washington University only allows Art Majors who have taken a prerequisite of 4 unrelated classes to take their photography courses. University of Washington appears to have similar requirements.

Unless there are some options that I missed, it looks like the best options are the Photographic Center Northwest and the Art Institute of Seattle. I am most interested in taking their starting photography classes, but am somewhat open to continuing on by taking a class here in there in their programs if I find it helpful. If this means that I end up getting a degree or certificate, that is fine, but knowledge and skill are my higher priorities.

Do you have experience with these two options that you could share?
Any reason why you would choose one or the other?
Any other suggestions or input?
