thank you all for the incredible comments, the votes, the faves, and the ribbon!! wow! that is so cool!
while i have a moment, let me try to answer some of the comments...
the rotation i've seen hair-whip shots before, and i liked mine, but i wanted it to make it stand out. the rotation was a lark, but after doing it, i liked it and decided to stick with it.
the tight crop i can't say much more than i tend to shoot 'em tight. i cropped some off the top, but didn't have any room to crop off the sides.
the number of takes this was the 2nd of 3 takes. lexa was willing to step up and help, but only to an extent.
the model yes, this is A Varya. the timing of this couldn't have been better. as much as lexa was happy for me getting a kodak potd, she was a little bummed that it was a solo shot of her brother. this kinda made up for that.
"You could easily submit this to a newspaper as a feature photo on a hot day." - alanfreed i did ;-) it's already run in one paper, and might run in a couple more before it's over. another little bonus for my daughter ;-)
her 'expression' that's something i'll keep in mind the next time...
that lone ONE vote ah, whatever. doesn't bother me, don't let it bother you.
some tips
shoot as close to water level as possible while still allowing the water to provide the bulk of the background.
shoot at f/2.8
prefocus, switch to manual focus, then shoot it. when shooting water or flying sand, the autofocus tends to hunt whatever's flying. it's better to have your focus set ahead of time so that you know what's going to be in focus.
if you're shooting someone coming up out of the water, encourange them to rip their arms up out of the water and to spin slightly. this will bring more water up into the air.
thanks again! it's been a great ride!!
cheers,
