Real-world Speed Challenge #2: Best of Back to School

Take 5 photos that illustrate things related to going back to school. Keep in mind the 'Best of' theme; for example, 'Best Place to Get Coffee before School', 'Best Bus Stop', 'Best Place for School Supplies', etc. Use your imagination, and do your best to bring in all 5 photos.

Again, title your images 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

Remember, less is more. Try to shoot tight (but not so tight as to become abstract), and pay attention to your lighting.

Just remember to keep the images hidden until you hear from me on Thursday. If you have any questions, post them here, or PM me. Good Luck!

Here is the assignment.

HEADS UP!!!

my apologies for any confusion. let me take a moment to try to get us all back on the same page...

1) regarding this week's assignment. let's extend the deadline until 5pm sunday, just so those who missed it can get something in.

2) if ya'll would prefer to be able to use the weekend, i could post up the assignments on weds, then have a 5pm sunday deadline.

3) you do NOT have to submit 5 photos (but i will be looking at those that do submit 5 before i look at those that submit less than 5). and, the more you shoot, the better you'll get ;-)

4) future assignments will be posted in this thread.

5) you will need a separate portfolio folder for each assignment

here are a couple ideas i have as far as what i would want out of this. one of my biggest peeves with weekly newspapers is that they typically don't put any effort into photo quality control. they will pretty much print whatever they get. what i would hope ya'll would get out of these excercises is 1) a better sense of what makes a good pj feature shot, and 2) the ability to shoot better pj feature shots.

i know it can be pretty involved, but, keeping it simple and general (for the time being), there are 3 key elements to work on: the subject, the composition, and the exposure. master these three elements, and you'll be miles ahead of most people.

as always, feedback & suggestions are welcome. lemme know what you think.

cheers,
skip

btw, judy, i'll touch base with you later!

Skip I'm not sure how I missed your post. I kept looking for a new one. I'm on the assignment and should be done by Sunday. I do like the idea of it ending during the weekend. But hey real world speed challenges arent suppose to be easy are they? Thanks

Thanks Skip for extending the deadline. I have 4 of the photos done right now. The deadline for over the weekend works better for me. So if you want to change it that is fine with me.

Anything new? Wouldn't you know I'd get mine done the one time I had extra time and didn't know it :)

I vote to keep the times during the week. My weekends are generally packed.

I guess Skip must be out meeting a deadline. Did anyone else do the second assignment?

I'm ready and waiting for the new assignment...

I admit to being way too busy this past weekend to get the assignment done, but now that life is closer to normal I was ready for another, but Skip is way busy it seems.

heyah, everyone, i'm back, coming up for air ;-)

first, if you did get to do last week's assignment, "best of back to school", please pm me, and i'll follow up as soon as i can!!

in the mean time, here's Real-world Speed Challenge #3: Best of Do It Yourself

BUT, there's twist...

Take 5 photos that show a sequence of how to do something. For example, "cooking breakfast". Photo #1: the ingredients, #2: eggs in the bowl, #3: toast, #4: bacon frying, #5: on the table.

Just pick any task and break it down into 5 photos. You can pick as complicated a task as you want, but keep the photography simple and to the point. Maybe you have some chore around the house you've been putting off; this might be a great way to kill two birds with one stone, as well as have some fun! I might even attempt "vacuum cleaner repair"...

I never did the third assignment because we never addressed the second assignment. So I assume that, while this was a fun and learning idea, there's just not enough time in Skip's day to keep up with it? Is anyone else still (realistically) interested?

I think it sounds like fun... would be interested in doing one.
