the EOS utility does give you a progress bar with how many pictures have been copied to the pc and how there are altogether, so if you aren't seeing those, and it seems like the program is just hanging, then there is a problem with the software itself, or the formatting of the card. Try using the EOS Viewer instead and see if that can talk to the camera and see the images.
A card reader is a better option anyway, as already stated. The USB interface isnt really the bottleneck when you're using the camera, rather its the speed at which the camera can read from the card and send the information. Your card reader will use USB as well, and will transfer images much, much faster.
Something else to bear in mind when using a card reader is that when you plug it in to your computer, any card you have in the card reader will in appear in the My Computer window (on the pc) , and will look and operate just like a removable driver, you will be able to copy images to and from the card just like you would normally copy files on the pc itself.
There is a strange issue with the EOS cameras when they are connected directly to the pc and you are transferring the images direct, in that you will be able to see the camera in the My Computer window, but if you navigate into the folder, you will only see any JPG files, so RAW will be invisible, which is just a plain odd decision by Canon.
