I just discovered the firmware update that will allow my lowly P&S Nikon to shoot in RAW. I know the benefits of RAW vs. JPG, and I know I want the option and I'm looking forward to experimenting. I've got Nikon View, but I know that there are other free RAW conversion software out there and that not all converters are created equal. So which RAW converter is the best and why? I am upgrading the camera while you all hash it out.

Well, it WAS Raw Shooter Essential. :(

Maybe someone has the old install they can send you. I think I deleted it.

It's still there, for now.

Sweet, I just checked that myself and was about to correct myself.

For free, there ain't nutin better.

I'm sure DxO, CaptureOne, Bibble, or Adobe CameraRaw might be more powerful. I tried Lightroom, but it ate my processor and almost crashed my PC.

I see RSE is still free. In case they put a price on it, I have it saved.

I use Adobe Bridge and Lightroom, although lightroom (as posted above) likes to eat your processor, and bridge isn't free.

My friend used to use RSE I believe.

Thanks for the RSE vote - I'm glad it was so unanimous instead of being a big argument with no conclusion. :-) Too bad it's appearing to be on the outs, though. Hopefully it turn out like 1stPage, in that the company stopped supporting it but has left it out there for download due to popular demand.

I think the only thing going forward is that they will not update the file conversion settings for new cameras, and then you'll have to buy something. (if you buy a new camera that is)

That's one powerful firmware upgrade.

Adobe lightroom is the best in my opinion, i used rawshooter essentials for a little bit, and the thumbnails on lightroom are lightning fast, and it has more adjustments that you can do to the RAW image aswell... you can download it straight from the adobe website (its a beta version, thats why its free)
