I am taking senior pictures of a young man tonight. This will be my first senior shoot with a male client. I am wondering if anyone has suggestions on posing him and also making him feel comfortable. I already know that he is less than enthusiastic about the session (his mom wants them done). Also, his mom describes him as an intellectual type. Any suggestions would be most appreciated!!

Hmmm, sounds like me when my mother made me get them done a few years back! I'd stress not doing to many "okay, smile!" shots. Some are okay, but mix them up with some more serious-expressioned ones.

You might try more casual poses: sitting on some steps, leaning against a wall with his arms crossed, or at his side, sitting backwards in a chair with his arms folded on the top. Maybe he has an idea, or something during the shoot will spark one.

Overall, if his mom described him as intellectual, I'd try to avoid the jock/sports/super-trendy stuff.

Good luck!

Definitely do casual!!! My brother is a professional photographer (i'm trying to get some of the talent through blood... not sure its working) and he took my senior photos... I LOVED THEM!!!! He had me be natural, we had fun with it, and he took black and white as well as color. Some outside, some inside! I ended up choosing a black and white we took outside. Its still my favorite pic of me!!

Good luck!

I'm thinkin' peanut butter and high heels... LOL

But, seriously, what kinda shoot is this going to be studio outdoor, enviromental, formal, semi-formal, casual, etc...?

If the weather cooperates we are going to do outdoor and indoor. I have three different backdrops (black, white and a hand painted tan one). I have already learned from idnic that I need to be sure he is at least 5 feet from the backdrop :)

I am going out now to see if I can get a cool chair and maybe some crates or boxes. I knew the shoot was coming up but his mom hadn't scheduled it yet. Then she called on Monday and wanted to do it ASAP. I hope when I get back you all have a ton of ideas for me!!

I also know that he just got back from a mission trip in Africa, so I am hoping that I can get him talking about that and time will just fly for him!

edit CASAUAL is the way I was thinking...but I am going to try a few formals at first and see how they go.

I would reconsider that. You will likely have better luck if you go casual first and get him to relax, and then do the formals last - they may come out better, and if he does get grumpy or tense again, the shoot's over anyway.
