1. Are there rechargable batteries compatible with the SB800, or are we stuck with just regular AA's?

2. Where can I get just a diffuser? Cheaper the better...

1. yes. you actually get more flashes from rechargable AAs than with regular batteries.

2. more kleenex = more diffusion.

1. I use regular supermarket variety rechargable AA batteries in my SB-800 and it works great.

2. Cheap = old gym sock over the top. Better = bite the bullet and get a lightsphere.

2. B&H got tons of them. Their performace varies and it largely matter of personal taste.

There's a great bit of tip in the forums here in a thread under 'mystery modifier revealed'

forum search will turn it up.

I'm going to make one myself...

I spent some time creating my own modifies. They worked well but were clumsy as hell. A $30 umbrella resolved some many problems.

You do know that the SB-800 comes with a simple diffuser in the box, don't you?

1. duracell has 2650 rechargables out... you just have to look around for them... they last quite a long time on a full charge

2. there's one in the box that works just fine... go spend more money on duracell's

Just pretty much a ditto to what everyone else has said. I use Energizer's NiMH batteries, and I get quite a few flashes out of each charge. I'd never waste money on alkalines.

There is a perfectly fine little diffuser that comes with the flash. I got the Gary Fong Special, and it works great :)

Ok thanks for all the replies. I need a new diffuser because I accidentally stepped on mine, so now it doesn't quite diffuse anymore :(

As for the rechargeable batts, I know there are different kinds (NiCd, Li-Ion, NiMh, etc), which ones are the best in this case?

You can buy a replacement diffuser. The part number is SW-10H. B&H sells it for $14

For rechargables, your choice is limited to NiCd and NiMh (there are no Lithium rechargable AA battereis, AFAIK). NiMh are definitely the way to go, they are very high capacity and don't suffer from memory effects like the NiCd do. Sanyo and Duracell are the best off-the-shelf brands. I bought mine from RipVan100, they sell an excellent smart charger - the Lightning Pack 4000N. If you are starting out, it would be better to buy a package of the charger + batteries. Do a Google search on the 4000N and you'll see what I mean. Here's one example.
