yay! Yadira (Yadi) is a girl I work with at the restaurant, I asked her if she would model for me as a practice shoot in exchange for prints, and she said yes
So this was my first "model shoot" and I'm pretty happy with it. This shoot was basically a "getting used to the camera" shoot. Next time, I want to practice on things like getting more candid moments, getting a bigger variety of poses, and getting more comfortable as a photographer so that I can make the model more comfortable too.
Overall, I think I did well, especially since Yadi is a really reserved kind of person. I can't wait to show her the proofs this Saturday (the next day we work together)...
Anyway, here are the pictures; opinions, critiques, suggestions, etc welcome, but only as long as they are constructive and nice, lol
Thanks for looking : )

You did well Amanda... good job. Exposure looks good on them and not noticing anything unflattering.

I think you did a very good job as well. The photos are well exposed as Leroy said and I like the processing you did on them.
The only thing I'd prefer is a little more variety, you have a lot of shots with her looking over her left shoulder.
Great start, keep it up :)
edit, this one is my favorite of the group ;)

I think they look nice. One thing I noticed, she has the same expression in all the shots. Once again, variety. Some different expressions would be nice. Good work, though. |

Left you a bunch of comments. I tried purposely to be critical. I really like them overall but figured I'd point out anything I could for your learning purposes. not trying to be a b^%ch, lol, don't hate me ;) |

I like this one, because Yadi seems more comfortable here and her smile looks very natural.
I think you did a great job and found wonderful model.

Thanks guys! I know that the pose and the look are really redundant, but that's kind of how she is all the time, I will have to come up with a plan for the next shoot.
I'm going to see about trying to adjust the exposure on some of the green background shots, and also maybe cropping the first pic. I'm trying to keep them within standard print ratios though...
I took these yesterday, and like I said, I won't see her until Saturday, so I've got a week to mess with them. Thank you for the suggestions, I really appreciate having a second (third, fourth, etc) set of eyes and minds |

Here's what you do. Grab all those old fashion magazines you have. I know you have some. Don't lie.
Tear out the poses that you like or would like to try. Put them into a binder. When you have a model sit down and pick 5 to try. You can also ask your models to bring poses with them that they want to try. Oviously you want to try to limit it a bit to keep things from getting out of hand and hectic.
Also grab a posing guide for portrait photographers. Great ideas on what to do. |

This is one of my favorites. Lighting on her face is a little flat/one dimensional but i reall like her pose, the horizontal crop and the way she looks back into the open space on the RH side. Nice job on them all. |

Fairly simple to fix with a little painting with black onto a soft light layer. Here's a quick edit for ya Amanda.
I painted with a soft black brush around the nose, under the face and beneath the lip to give the face a bit more depth.

Ok, cropped the one, and tried messing with selective exposure on her face for the others... also tried Leroy's soft light, black brush thing on the horizontal pic... I played with the opacities and such, not quite sure about it, maybe I'm doing something wrong |

Here's another rework with a little bit less exposure on the face, more shadows in the face. Did this all with dodge/burn.

Great work Amanda! You've got yourself a really cute model there. And the photography is pretty darn good too.
The one common theme in my critiques had to do with the cropping. I've done this a lot myself and usually have to fix it by cropping as I convert from raw to jpeg. The problem is that I use the center focus point because it is the sensitive and most accurate on my camera. The same may be true of yours as well. And you definitely *want* to focus on the eyes, so you're doing good there. You just need to recompose after focusing. (or crop the image in post)
Anyway, congratulations. I hope my critique didn't come off harsh - was meant more to help if I could.
I hope we'll see more of Yadi and your work in the future!

Thanks Brian, Thanks David... I will continue to work on them, like I said, I wanted to avoid cropping so that I could stay in the 4x6/8x12 ratio, but a lot of them are alread 8x10 anyway, but that makes it hard cuz there isn't a 4x5... How do you do this?
I will try with the dodge/burn... and maybe try cloning out some of the poles..
Thanx for all the comments, and also, Bryan, these were taken at the Lott Home in Oroville, she's actually an Oroville model, but you wouldn't think it from the looks of her, eh? ; ) |

Congrats amanda. Good golly what a cutie she is! She looks like she might have some Icelandic in her blood... ? ;)
A bit heavy on the eye makeup though..
I LOVE eug's suggestion and will do something like that myself...
I like the idea because once I get a binder full of poses by others and get others to duplicate them, I can then start to replace them with my own pics!
