and not just your harddrives!

back up anything that stores anything you might not want to lose!

i didn't find out until it was too late that i could have backed up all the data on my now defunct cell phone. all the numbers and addresses i've been carrying around for years are now GONE. oh well, may others also learn from my mistake...

:Short Story:

I had a computer and i always (in my mind) thought that computers were reliable and nothing would happen to them if you took care of them. WELL I WAS WRONG!! My compute started to act all funny I took it to a guy to look at it and I found out that all my stuff was on 1 board and part of it was going out (which was the mother board I guess). Well he tried to fix it and the Computer tried to fix it self and reformat the hard drives and stuff I lost about 2,000 pictures. Lucky for me it was just Christmas pictures and stuff like that. Nothing for the Customers I have taken pictures forâ€Â¦Ă˘€Â¦. SO BACK IT UP!! On a discâ€Â¦.2nd hard driveâ€Â¦.. FLOPPY (LOL J/K) I actually have a 256mb Zip drive and I love it about the size of my pinky it has help a lot for JPEG for me really wellâ€Â¦..

To add to this, everyone who has a website should be doing backups as well. DO NOT rely on your web host to have a backup of your site. If your site uses a database for anything make sure you do regular backups of your database information as well.

Ive been a tech in the computer industry for 18+ years now and I have seen some real horror stories.

Ouch... unfortunately, I've been there, done that. Is the phone totally dead or just the LCD screen? It sounds like it's totally dead but just in case if it's just the screen you can still retrieve the data.

As for backing up data, I know what you mean and regularly create a ghost image of my main system drive (programs and OS only) onto another drive that is identical to my system drive. I also ghost my data onto another drive which is identical to my data drive.

Hope you get your phone data back.

Let me plug BitPim for those who haven't heard of it. It's a neat little program that workds with a number of (but not all) phones. You have to buy a usb cable for your phone but then you can use the software to sync contacts, photos, wallpapers, ringtones, etc. Very nice if you are on a pay-per-transfer plan with your provider. And it's free. :)

and yet another thing to remember...

if you are using any proprietary storage devices (for example, iomega tools like jaz, zip, peerless), you might want to consider moving them to something else.

i recently had a scare when i couldn't get my peerless drives to seat properly. after 30 minutes or so of fiddling with it, i was able to read the drives. now i'm in the process of moving about 40gb of data off of my peerless drives onto an external hd; once done, i'll try to ebay the peerless--and if that fails, i'll throw them away. it's just not worth the risk.
