I own a Sony DSC-F828W and I was noticing that my pictures were looking all washed out and the colors weren't as vibrant. I found the button that lets you adjust the white balance and there was a setting for shooting with an overhead light and voila my pictures were full of color and the resolution benifited from that.

The next day I went to show my wife the setting and when I went to experiment with the settings they were gone. All that was availabe was...

ΓΆ€ΒΆ Auto
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Flash
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Manual
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Manual Set

The settings...

ΓΆ€ΒΆ Daylight
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Cloudy
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Fluorescent
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Incandescent

were no longer available. :(

I reset the camera and I found all of the settings for white balance on the P setting but when I went to the A setting and adjusted the white balance it turned my flash off. So I turn it on and the only choices are...

ΓΆ€ΒΆ Auto
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Flash
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Manual
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Manual Set

So I go back to the P setting where all the options were available for white balance and now even though I corrected the change that I made all that is left to choose from is, you guessed it...

ΓΆ€ΒΆ Auto
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Flash
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Manual
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Manual Set

It's like the
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Daylight
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Cloudy
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Fluorescent
ΓΆ€ΒΆ Incandescent

settings left the camera.

I called Sony and the guy couldn't help me. How can I drop 900.00 on a camera but the manufacturer cannot help me?

Does anyone know what I can do?

Turn your flash off.

Thank you for replying.

Would you explain to me how the flash works in relation to the settings and why it has to be off?

I also noticed that when I take pictures with the flash off the images get blurry.

When you are working in 'P' or 'Auto' mode you are basically letting the camera decide the settings for you. Granted in 'P' mode you can choose the WB. But if you turn the flash on then you are reducing the range of the options available. There is a flash WB for when you use flash...therefore the others are irrelavant.

The reason it is blurry is because the camera recognises the flash is turned off and needs to compensate for the lack of light...so slows the shutter. If you are photographing a still life and you use a tripod then there should be no blur unless the subject moves. If you are photographing without a tripod then there is more chance of blur due to movement on both the subject and the photographers part.

My suggestion is to use a tripod...or learn how to use the 'S' ('Tv' on Canons) setting. This enables you to choose the other settings including the shutter speed but enabling the camera to decide the Aperture. Or to learn how to use the 'M' setting where you can choose everything. This gives you greater control. It is trickier to use but with practise you will never look back.
