I've never changed or upgraded my firmware, since I got my Nikon D50 last year.
Should I? Is there an upgrade available? How would I go about it?

There are no updates available for the D50 yet, so you don't have to do anything.
Usually, you should update firmware--they're typically released to fix known issues with your camera--glitches, focus issues, things like that. Plus some will improve menus and options too. When a new firmware is released, it'll actually list all the features and fuctions that will change as a result of performing the update. So you'll know if you need to install it or not, prior to actually doing so.
Just make sure your battery is charged or that you're plugged in to an A/C outlet when you eventually do it--'cause turning your camera off during an update can mess it up!
