Can an image be mirrored or flipped & still be allowed in a basic challenge? Thanks
08/04/2006 03:22:32 PM · #2
Nope.
Not in advanced either.

Flipping the whole image, horizontal, vertical, etc is as is rotating, but cannot duplicate any part of it or move major elements.

Huh? Can we get SC clarification on this please? Thought this had come up before some time ago and it was valid...

I'm sure mirroring and flipping are allowed in basic!

I think everyone is talking about different things. You can flip your entire image so that it's facing the opposite direction. You cannot flip/mirror your image so that it is duplicated in that same image. Does that make sense?

Okay, so I can rotate an image however many degrees but I can't mirror it to get something facing the otherway (for example)?

This is flipping/mirroring:

Not allowed with either ruleset.

I should have added a comma after the word is to make it grammatically correct:
"Flipping the whole image, horizontal, vertical, etc is, as is rotating..."

You can mirror the ENTIRE image, not something selectively inside the image. Same with flipping.

okay, I think I've got it. PSPX refers to a horizontal reversal as mirroring & vertical reversal as flipping. I don't want to duplicate or split anything within the picture just reverse the whole picture.

Thanks for the quick reply everyone. I don't play very often and already have 1 DQ...don't want to chance another one!

Buy a Cokin Mirage Filter and make the rules obsolete ;-)

I see I'm too late, but I'll post it anyway since I took the trouble:

"Flipping" is to reverse an image right-to-left, "mirroring" is to combine the original and its flipped version into a mirrored image. Mirroring is never legal unless there are special rules, flipping is always legal.

original

flipped

mirrored

Robt.

Thanks Bear_Music! I see that my software's terminology caused me to ask the wrong question in the first place. I'll carry on withough worrying about that anymore! ;-)

Actually, in PSP mirroring means to reverse the entire image right to left (what you call flipping). So, mirroring in PSP is legal. Not everyone uses photoshop.

Yah. I was being a little absolute. I wasn't even thinking of Photoshop per se, just explaining the terminology I have always used for lo these many decades. I'm sure other people use the terms differently, sorry.
