I am thinking about buying a Canon PowerShot S3 IS, the zoom is better than what I am currently using. I do not know how I would like the 4 AA battery deal.
Can anyone tell me if this camera sucks the batteries dry, and if it is more of a headache? thanks in advance!! |

The ability to use AA batteries was one of the primary reasons I chose it myself -- I hate proprietary batteries. It's really hard to find a place these days more than ten minutes from a source of AAs.
I use NiMH batteries, and they last pretty long. As is typical, it's really dependent on how much you use the big LCD screen for either shooting or reviewing.
I basically shot all day at the Kite Festival last weekend on one set of 2200mA Panasonic batteries, and I'm still using them now (though not often) on the same charge.

I have its predecessor. Same chip, so probably similar battery use.
Using 2500 mAh batteries, more tahan once I've shot 1000+ full-size photos (5MP for the S2 IS) on one charge, with some reviewing and videoing in the mix.
I also love the AA setup. I use 2 sets of rechargeables and a 15-min. recharger. And I keep a spare set of alkalines in my case. |

My camera uses AA sized rechargables too.
and I second what Paul said - they are convenient and easy to find should you run out of juice on vacation or during long shoots. And after a few years when your AA-rechargables finally dies or lose charge, you can easily and cheaply buy new fresh sets. I've seen new ones that is 2700mA now - those should be long lasting. |

I have the S1. My experience is mixed. As long as you have good batteries and a good charger, and the batteries were freshly charged, they last in the camera pretty well. But as batteries get "older", you need to worry about whether you have enough with you. Also remember batteries lose their charge while sitting idle.
I think they're fine, but it hasn't earned my trust in the same way the Li Ion batteries in my Rebel XT have. So I usually carry three sets if shooting something important. And I buy 2200 to 2700 batteries.
I have two good charges, the LenMar Mach I and the Maha (world traveler model which doesn't have a power brick). Both are very good but the Lenmar is faster and more convenient.

Reading reviews before I bought my S2IS, I found charts comparing battery life between comparable cameras and this one seemed to outperform the rest by a fair bit in this area.
The set I used today are only 1850mAh, not freshly charged, and I still got over 200 shots, with the camera being on almost constantly for about 4 hours. And it's certainly not hard to carry a few extras.
But I agree with buying the most powerful ones you can. |

I have the S3 - the battery life is a non issue. Batteries last just as long as any other point n shoot.
Great Camera. |

I just bought the S2 for work and I have to say it's pretty snazzy...exactly what we needed here for at work. I've got the rechargeable batteries and haven't had to recharge it yet...of course we don't go on long picture taking excursions for the most part...but I'm very please that I chose the S2.

NEW QUESTION: text
I currently have a tele conversion lens for the f-717 58mm, I have found an adapter for the S3, but would I run into any problems stepping up to the 58mm?? |
