I just purchased a 580ex speedlight and i now realize that the "bracket mount" on the side of the flash is not a standard 1/4 20 tripod size.
the hole is designed to secure the flash to canon's sb-e1 bracket that is almost impossible to find.

does anyone know what the specifications for the thread on the bracket mount are? it is definitely a 1/4 hole, but the threads are tighter.

i had hoped that this flash included it's own sturdy tripod thread built into the metal frame instead of requiring a mount from the flimsier bottom of the flash. as is i will have to try to rig my own.

thanks to any engineery types who can answer my question.

I have to admit, I don't even know what you're talkin' about :) Do you mean on the side of flash connected to the silver knob in this photo?

If so, I don't know the answer, so we'll call this a bump (for kirbic).

If you are looking for a Flash bracket, I'd consider the Really Right Stuff Flash Arm, a tad pricy but very well designed and built.

Surely metric size and thread?

Looks like its about 1/4" fine thread (1/4"x32?) but it may be metric.

I'm trying to crack this nut, too. It's not 1/4 inch NF on the 580EX. That threaded socket is removeable by a single screw and I have a half a notion to remove it and make my own. My dilemma is that I have gotten the screws stripped in the top of hotshoe end of my Cord 2 and I need some more support. Thinking about getting the SB-E1 and cutting off the left-most L and attaching it to my bracket. I'm about to make a frontal assult on Canon Support...again. The downfall of Canon will be their customer support.

mm. ultimately i would love to have the flash mounted "sideways" from the threaded socket on top of a lightstand or light tripod or something. i tend to rig these flashes in precarious positions and they always tend to wobble a little whn scred in from the bottom, especially when the off camera shoe cord is also in play.

i tried removing the single screw to take the whole socket out. nothing interesting underneath and the socket is so shallow i have little hope of it supporting much weight on its own.

i considered the same surgery on an SB-E1, but they are way overpriced to be harvesting pieces from.

The three possibilities in 1/4-inch are 1/4-20 (UNC), 1/4-28 (UNF) and 1/4-32 (UNEF, a rarely-used specialty thread). Apparently others have ruled out 1/4-20 and 1/4-28; I seriouisly doubt that it's 1/4-32. The most likely scenario is it's metric. A trip to a good hardware store should sort it out. Take the flash & try metric fasteners. You should find a fit.
