OK, I decided to buy the Sigma 15-30 f/3.5-4.5. I understand the lens hood is not removable and it takes 'rear type gel filters'. I tried a google search and came up empty. Can anyone link me somewhere I can read up on them? Thanks.

Anyone?

B&H sells them, but they seem really expensive, at least for a polarizer.

if the 15-30 has a small clip in the back of the lens and gives you a template to cut out a gell filter, you can get a sampler pack cheaply from B&H: //www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=NavBar&A=search&Q=

On the other hand, with a digital camera you can use PS to simulate any color filter, so the only thing that would be usefull would be an ND filter. (even if you could get it, its tough to rotate polarizing material once the lens is put on the camera)

The use of these "rear gel" filters would be geared toward film photography, not digital. They are basically color-shifters, and you can do that in PP with digital.

So there are no 'premade' filters for this lens? Such as a polarizer, ND, etc...I wouldnt be to fond of holding a filter in front of the lens while trying to shoot.

There are many. You are ignoring the fact that the lens cap has threads for filters. You'll want slim 82mm filters.

What he said. The purpose of the rear holder is to allow relatively inexpensive use of a wide variety of colored filters which, if you were to buy them in the 82mm size, in glass, would be prohibitively expensive.

Do you have this lens? All the reviews and data I have read says there are no threads in the front. The extreme curvature on the lens and the fact the petal hood is non-removable doens't allow a front filter to be used. I'm not disagreeing, just going from what I've read.
Here is a link to the page on Sigmas website for that lens. Note the specs in the right column.
The only reason I posted this was so I will know what kind of filter I need. Maybe I can just wait until I get the lens.

I've almost stopped using my version of this lens exeept for IR work with gel filters
(and with film 15-30 is WIDE :)

i find the little clip for filters is really bad & i was breaking a lot of filters when trying to insert them
- so now i unscrew (carfully) the filter holder - & place it on, then rescrew ...

I've seen installation instructions for putting them in. They say to take off the 3 screws, insert then re-screw.

Anyway, I'll see when I get the lens. I needed something wide and the 12-24 was to expensive and the 10-20 I could not find ANYWHERE.

The Tokina 12-24 is the same price as the 10-20 or the 15-30, and is an excellent lens, IMHO. Takes regular 77mm filters. Too bad you already ordered the 15-30.

I looked into it. Tokina doesn't make that lens for Minolta mount.

Edit: Here Canon and Nikon only.

Didn't check that, sorry. Too bad, because it's a really nice lens for a nice price.
