That took guts to post Cindi. I have to say your burning of the muslin and floor is borderline. I just keep thinking of SandyP and her poor flamingo shot.

I totally agree, Jason. I saw it on a monitor other than mine and almost died at the slop I saw. For the record, the final version looks great on my monitor! lol

Heh, I'm not talking about sloppiness, I'm talking about major elements. My monitor here on my desktop is far too dark for me to see anything sloppy there. It's all black to me.

Ya, I'm not busting you. I'm sorta just surprised that it passed muster. I know SC isn't perfect and application of the rules (especially the subjective ones) will vary over time. I just thought that SandyP's DQ had set some precedent and have always been nervous about burning things in the background since. Were I working on your picture I would have figured there was no way I could get away with burning that muslin and the floor.

Not lookin' to get you a DQ. If anything, I'd rather give Sandy her ribbon back. Mostly looking to get a feel for "what goes" for my own work.

Well it's good to know where that line might be. I'm not sure I would have had the guts to do that edit without getting it pre-validated first. However with that said, it's the concept that makes the shot not the editing.
01/26/2007 09:54:32 PM · #186
Sure, I understand that, Jason and was mostly why I chose to show the original of that shot. I have cloned as needed in the past, but never quite as much as that image needed. I held my breath for 2 days after the challenge closed hoping it would pass validation. Thankfully, SC now sends an email saying it has been validated else I would still be holding my breath.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but I'd be curious as to whether any passing SC would care to share the final vote on that one. Was it close? Did it pass with flying colors (ie. can I get away with even more?)

I'd love to know.

OK, back to the previous subject.

I've noticed that quite a few of these started out rather dark. Is this being done on purpose? If so, why?

I was surprised mine got the thumbs up, too. It seems like SC has been much liberal on the major elements rule lately than they have been in the past.

Especially the "Hoops" shot.

I would love to see elsapo. That tiger was something else!

I'm not very experienced in Tone Mapping or HDR, but here is what I did.

Started with the origianl RAW file opened in Photomatix

I chose Tone Mapping and here is what it produced after playing with the sliders a little.

Saved as TIF, I opened it in CS2 and removed a lot of the blue/cyan tones to warm it up. After that I tweaked sharpness, Burn the river a little, and the mountians in the upper right corner. I removed a pinkish tone from the house in the lower left corner.

The magic was done in Photomatix. The rest was color correction and other tweaks.

WOW, major element removal in this image.. surprised this didnt get DQ'd!

I hesitated to post this because I hate showing unfinished work, my clients never see unprocessed images... but... for the sake of discussion:

was the original image used for this:

I typically don't do NEARLY as much editing on my shots, but I really wanted this image to work, so I was willing to do what it took. Obviously, the first thing I did was to crop (the gray box shows where). Then I painstakingly cloned the black backrop into the places where it just wasn't big enough. Next, and also not easy, I cloned the logo off the shirt of the guy on the right. After that, I had a clean image to work with and the rest was just normal editing. The dumb thing is I did a fast & sloppy job the first time and had to do it all over again for the challenge entry.

Yeah, apparently with the new advanced rules major element removal isn't such a big deal anymore.
