I have just come into a $500 gift card for a camera store. (woo hoo!) I'm trying to decide which way to go.
Idea #1:
10-22mm lens for my 300D.
Pros: $500 nearly covers it.
Cons: Would have to resell on the eventual upgrade to a FF sensor.
5D
Pros: won't need a 10-22. my 24-105 will likely be wide enough on it. Is an ultimate goal for upgrade.
Cons: a substantial outlay over the $500 (not to be lightly ignored). The camera store I have the gift card for (shutterbugonline.com, an Oregon store), lists the 5D for $3299 when OneCall is selling it for $2899. I don't know if they will deal or not. That basically eats the $500 right there.
Do you think the 5D will come down quickly after the D80 is announced? Looking for opinions and of course people willing to "help" me spend my money...

I don't know the answer to the price drop question. But I think your ready for the upgrade. Just bite the bullet and go for it.
Wait you and a 5D forget I said anything ...

Jason...you need a D200!
Only kidding...I would look at an upgrade in camera...the 300D is below your capabilities I reckon. It's now old hat. The lenses you have are also better than the camera. Get the 5D...a man on your salary and wealth should have seven of the things!

No? 5D. Save money. I agree with Waz, you need to upgrade! |

"Do you predict 5D price will lower soon after D80?"
No, but it should when the 7D comes out :P |

hehe, unfortunately my Mennonite upbringing has left me very sensible with money. After mortgage, student loans, charitable donations, IRA saving and the such, I ain't as rich as you may think. I drive a '98 Toyota Corolla with a dented door for crying out loud. ;)
I did find out that they actually sell for $3000 at the store (remember Oregon would have no sales tax and no shipping) and they will match OneCall with overnight delivery which may knock it closer to $2950. I think I could maybe get $500 for my 300D (I could throw in my 80-200 consumer lens), so my outlay would be about $2000, which is still quite a bit of money.
Decision...decisions...

I'm going to break with crowd here.
I look at photographers like you and goodman and few others. The non-FF sensor is not holding you back, obviously. With the possible exception of lower noise at high ISO, i don't think the 5D is worth the price jump.
I do agree that the 300D Rebel feature-wise is below your abilities.
I recommend getting a 20D/30D and the 10-22 lens.
You will still be way below the price of a 5D, you have an 8MP sensor, and a kickass lens.
I'll bet you can find a really good deal on a 20D. I don't think there is a great deal of funtional difference between the 20D and the 30D. Cindi (idnic) just got a 30D to along with her 20D to have another camera body. She can tell you the practical differences.
But, if you do get the 5D, I'm sure you will not be disappointed.
Good luck Doc! |

That's a 'scam' store. Your friend actually bought from them and said he had a good experience?

scarbrd, one of the ultimate goals is to possibly get my stuff into some galleries. The one gallery I spoke to here was interested, but wanted to be sure I could go up to 30x40 in size. That is too much of a stretch for 6MP, and likely would be too much for 8MP as well. The 5D should reach that easily. So the increase in MP is my chief reason to upgrade. My second would be noise. I do find the 300D unusable almost at 1600 and even quite noisy at 800. Third the FF sensor would help my landscape shooting with the lack of need for a wider lens. While I had the 17-40L I was ok, but my switch to the 24-105L (which I love), has left me lacking on the wide side. The 5D would indirectly fix this.

I'm a resolution ho myself. I hear what you are saying. I didn't know about the 30x40 requirement, but I've done some very large prints with the 8 MP and I have been more than pleased. The only real drawback is you can't crop all that much with the 8 MP. The 5D would give you more latitude in that regard.
The 300D is lacking in many areas, agreed. Everything you mention is true, my point was that the 5D isn't going to give you better pictures simply by being a FF sensor.
I still think Canon will have to answer the call from Nikon on the 10+MP sensor. and that should be sooner than later. Usually Canon leads the pack, Nikon jumped them with the D200.
Can't wait to hear what you decide! |

Actually two people I know bought cameras from them (D50 and D200) and both were very happy. The only problem was, they were trying to convince you to buy whole bunch of other crop, but that̢۪s up to you. |

What if you sold the gift card and put that toawards buying the 5D at another dealer that sells it for even less? |

I would get the wide angle lens. You can always resell it here for a good resale value while you save money for your full frame. Then when you get close to buying the 5D or whatever body you decide you can sell the lens and add the extra money for the body. And while your saving you will have the awesome wide angle lens to steal all the ribbons with. :)

Google in Canon 5D. I have seen it online for less than $2000.
Then use the $500 for a lens!

Online for less than $2000 does not mean you will receive one after paying less than $2000... ;) I know better than that.
