Alright.. I'm just beginning to learn how to use clone (it isn't going well) and I wanted to make sure I understand the usage per the advanced editing rules.

"Selective Editing: Adjustments can be made selectively to your photo. Cloning, dodging, burning, etc. to improve your photo or remove imperfections or minor distracting elements, etc. is acceptable. However, using any editing tools to duplicate, create, or move major elements of your photograph is not permitted."

So.. I understand that I can remove minor things, such as telephone poles or wires (assuming they aren't a significant part of the photo)..

.. but is it okay to clone something in?

An example idea would be my Ten challenge entry.. I did a line of pilings with some water in the background and some small pebbles in the foreground.

Would cloning one of the pilings to make the count ten be acceptable in advanced editing if I'd only actually had nine pilings to begin with? Or would that be considered a major element? Would this depend on the challenge it was entered in -- i.e. its a major element since the point is to have something depicting 10 but if the subject had been marine architecture where the # wasn't the focus it'd be a minor element?

Would cloning a small couple of rocks and adding them to the the foreground to balance the photo out be acceptable? Or is that a major element too?

Is adding anything to the image using cloning allowable under the rules at all? (I'm not talking about cloning something from another source with this question)

Thanks a bunch!

I would stay away from cloning things into your picture, even in advanded editing.

Cloning to remove an unimportant yet distracing element is quite a bit different than adding someting, especially adding some to fit the challenge.

I can not speak for the SC, but I think they would DQ the entry.

If an object did not exist in the original, it's safe to say it can't be added. Think of it this way... if you are considering adding it, it must have an impact on the composition, conformance to the challenge, etc, or you wouldn't feel it necessary to add it. It becomes a major element almost by definition.
You can, however, clone over an area where something minor has been removed, and re-create background in doing so. If you happen to duplicate small stones or foliage, that's quite acceptable.

Yeah I read that part of the rule, but I wasn't sure if they were saying you cannot duplicate [anything], create [anything] or move major elements..

Or if the duplicate and create were also in reference to just the major elements designation and thus allowing minor duplications and creations of other aspects..

Thus my last question. :)

I do agree that its probably best to just not clone things into but should the need arise I was hoping to find out if it was okay. Maybe one of the SC folks will be able to say one way or another.

Thanks for the help so far!

edited to add: Oop, too slow! Thanks for the insight Kirbic!
