My mobile phone contract is due to expire in a week or so's time.

I have in the last three years used Windows Smartphones (HTC SPV, C500 and M500 from Orange). However, I see that there are now a couple of phones that sell themselves on their camera capability.

The two that I have my eye on are:

Nokia N93 (3.2MP, 3x Optical Zoom, video camera, possibly a bit chunky)

//www.nokia.com/nseries/index.html#product,n93

Sony Ericsson K800i (3.2MP, autofocus, xenon flash)

//www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp?cc=gb&lc=en&ver=4000&template=pp1_loader&php=php1_10407&zone=pp&lm=pp1&pid=10407

Does anyone have experience or views on whether either of these (or something else) are any cop?

I am in the cell industry. I have not used these personally but have been told by some of our testers that the new 3.2 MP cameras are not any better in low light than current ones. Samsung also has one out as well. Personally I woudl go with one of the new model Smart phones.

edit sorry my wife was still logged in. ignore the above.

Not sure which one is better, but I believe MK knows where to get a great deal on one.

Would such a delicate flower still have the fortitude to Smite? I think not. You jest. :P

Yes - I used to work for Ericsson, so have always been sympathetic to their products (pre-Sony) and antipathy for Nokia. It's not an SLR, but for a phone this is pretty impressive:

I have the k800i, it's alright. Low light is not its speciality, but what do you expect from something that's basically tiny.

Some pictures exhibit fringing (in areas of high contrast) or noise (low light) but PSP has filters that can effectively remove a lot of this.

I'll stick some pictures in my portfolio if you want?

It's a very competent phone though, the UI is fantastic.

Didn't notice the mechanical shutter that could be nice.

Unfortunatly for me I work for a CDMA company and Nokia doesn't do much for CDMA.

Thanks - some samples would be good! I had guessed that low light was not great. I played with the UI on the website, and agree that it looks very good and useable.

I've put four pics up that I took in the last couple of weeks. One of them is here -

The rest are in my k800i collection. I think they are all unaltered.

Thanks!

I see what you mean about the fringing. But this looks to be reasonable quality - certainly useable.

The alternative is for me to look at one of the tiny p&s cameras (if they are much better) and to stick to a pda type phone (though with all that added to the work blackberry, my pockets would quickly fill up).

Apologies if you own a pair, but one look at the tie that the model is wearing shows what kind of person buys these...!

It's certainly decent enough for something that you can very easily carry around. Serves as a handy snapshot camera when I don't want to lug around a 20D.

I acidentaly bought a pair at an outlet store and ahve never used those stupid pockets. I carry a blackberry, and a regular phone and just deal with it. And why didn't that person iron those pants before the photos were taken?

I dont know about them but i like the 1st one by its looks but i would think with the twisting of the screen it would wear and tear fast.

i also like the bottom one as well because of the big screen, plus it is solid and no twisting of the phone.

Look wise i like the 1st one.....

I have the LG vx8100 (thru verizon) & it can take from 160x120 to 1280x960 resolution & you can buy a mini sandisk that you can take out & actually take to walmart & have pictures printed. I haven't printed any out yet but I saw the samples at the store & they looked pretty good.... just my 2 cents :)

ummm....isn't it a phone? I am sad that you can't just get a PHONE...just the phone. I don't want no crappy camera, games, music player, whatever else they are cramming in there. With all that other stuff the phone part must be the size of a dime, and I could just have it crammed in my earhole.
and oh yeah (my pet peeve now)....STOP DRIVING WITH THE CELLPHONE UP TO YOUR EAR! Handsfree thing costs less than $8. Did you see the study about cellphones and drunk drivers being equally dangerous and liable to have an accident and/or kill someone?

I am in a bad mood today
:)

I would recommend being very careful to not get a crippled phone. It's been noted that Verizon is crippling its Motorola Razr and other phones so that files cannot be transferred to/from the phone and your PC. (The phone has a USB port on it that normally would let you do this, but Verizon modifies the phone's original firmware so this is not possible.)

This way you have to buy their crappy ringtones at $2.99 a pop (but I already own a ton of music on CDs! why can't I just use that), and if something happens to your phone, too bad, you lose your games, ringtones, etc. and have to buy them again.

Anyway, my wife got a new phone w/ Verizon and it sucks how Verizon crippled it so we can't get the photos off the phone for free, etc. It's lame.

There are ways around that sometimes...

legalbeagle, I personally would like to see more use of phonecams on this site, possibly challenges that specify them.
Yup, they are crappy cameras, however there are a few phonecam pictures on dpc in challenges and other forums. I find use of the camera interesting.
I think most cameras here are not in the league of camera you are looking at. Cameras, w/ proper exif credentials that have been admitted to dpc camera info are fairly rare. (interesting note - first camera listed on dpc is Nokia 3650 Phone Cam)
My LG 6000 was one of the early phonecams listed & probably remains in dpc camera information not because it has any legal exif capability, but because it is an old listing, before a requirement & w/pictures that have been entered in challenges.
Newer cameras listed must have exif file ability.

Here are some further dpc site links related to phonecams that I am aware of:

my cameraphone gallery

my phonecams -

LG VX6000

Motorola E815

Konador has some good submissions with his Nokia 6630 Phone

Yep, I asked for the k800i to be added but the reply said they needed a link to the exif spec, which I can't find for it (even though the phone does produce exif data for the pics).
