I want to have a go at low light portraits and maybe some nude shots.
Can anyone give me some advice on lighting etc..
or even just point me in the right direction to find some, either on this site or the web.
Any help will be appreciated.
cheers nick

its funny you say that because it has been a combination of seeing your images and others from the GTG and my girlfriend saying "when are you going to take some nice pictures of me" that has made me want to learn.

I don't really know what I can contribute, but if it were me, I'd start with a single light source and possibly a reflector. Maybe working with a second light source that is a fair bit weaker. Color temperature isn't a huge issue, but it can be if it's extreme (IMHO).
Use a constant light source like a bare or hooded light bulb instead of a flash. (You can use a flash later if you want once you have gotten used to things and have a light meter) This will give you the ability to see what you will be getting.
Still try to shoot a bit to the right of the histogram to keep your shadow areas clean and the noise low, then bring the black point up a bit to artificially decrease the bottom end of your dynamic range.
Just some basics that you probably already know.
Of course, I'm hardly one to speak. I just wish I had something to shoot other than myself and a few toys I find lying about sometimes. |

Thanks Eschelar, its the basics that i need to know as i have never tried it before. And even though the best way to find out is practice I kinda want to know what im doing a little bit before i get some pics or she may not like them and not let me take anymore.

Perhaps you could post some suggestions on how to get women to say that. ;) |

I can tell you this. If her nose was pointing towards 12:00 and the softbox was pointing at her from 3:00-4:00. I also did some burning to darken the shadow.
Same set up as this one which taken from behind me.

did mine with only one lightsource, a strobe with a makeshift snoot made of foil where the opening was a vertical slit not circular... light was placed above my shoulder facing down just about even distance with my body from the camera... You can play with the brightness of the light and your aperture to get the amount of light you want |

If you don't have a softbox an easy way to make one by taking your lamp and using a white shower curtain in front of it to diffuse the light.

No advice, other than those shots were taken with a softbox purchased with some sort of currency they call Euro's. I still can't figure it all out and I still have a pocket full of'em.
I have no inexpensive solution for you but to get that shot, I had to buy a plane ticket to Munster, Germany, stay at some hotel....tolerate these people called DPCers (too many Dutch, I should add), drink beer, eat German food, while getting spit on by this dude
on top of trying to figure out this dude
and this dude
where I still have no answer.
And I have to say, it was worth every single penny. Haven't figured out the Euros yet, so the jury's still out there.
See you next year, I hope?

Hi Nick
I would suggest you work with natural light only (preferably sunlight but whatever ambient light you have). Single source light is best to start with and then possibly considering some complementary lighting (either a mirror or some other reflective surface).
You should have a very good lens, steady hands or something to rest on, and work with someone who's patient and willing to twist, roll & move those very small amounts which will make the light on their body just fantastic. I would suggest underexposing 1/3-1 stop and most importantly working with an incident light metre or at least a grey card -- I always spot measure the light and calculate the contrast range in the image I want to photograph to ensure detail where I want it and without bleached highlights.
Good luck - you'll have lots of fun
