I had some family in from out of town last week and I ended up taking some candid shots that I thought turned out pretty decent. Any thoughts on these? I know that the lighting in the B&W of the girl in #7 is a little harsh, but like I said these were candids, so I wasn't paying a whole lot of attention to those things. Thanks in advance!

Whoa! Dude! You need to make those links instead of monster images...

FWIW, I feel all but the B&W images are over-processed. I like to play with "gothic glow" or similar actions myself, but in the end don't think they make for good portraits. Some things are better left "normal".

My .02 american dollars of course.

Nice photos. Next time try to be at same level of the kids, unless you really want to give them an inferior look.

Hi, They are good but look more like portrait pictures than candid. The glow effect doesn't work well with candid IMO. #4 looks good, I think it is the best.

I think I would go back and try to process them as portraits and I believe you would have better results. And watch you POV when taking photographs.

Overall good photos, processing a little strong. Keep up the work.

Thanks everyone! Yeah, I was going for something a little more artistic in #4...not something I would normally do for a portrait. Keep the comments and critiques comin'! LOL! Also, thank you kirbic for doing the links!

You might find this helpful. I noticed that in 6 of your last 10 forum postings you've put up large images or had them edited by SC for you. ;^)

Basically I agree with whats said above, far too over-processed for portrait shots, and not `candid` enough for candid shots. Without trying to sound snotty I know a few years back I took loads of shots of my kids/family etc, that I processed to death in photoshop that at the time I thought were the dogs b*ll*cks!! Now I look back at them and wince! Sometimes `less is more` is the key.

OK, now some hopefully useful info, try looking for a tutorial on how to convert images to BW without using the `convert to grayscale` mode (for example, using the channel mixer). Basically converting to grayscale does not make a `proper` black and white image, however with channel mixer you can roughly emulate the way in which BW film captures different colours, which makes for a much `richer` black and white experience.

Also agree with getting down to the kids level when taking kid shots.

Keep taking photos and posting though, always happy to comment.

Well, thank you marksimms. As far as the b&w photo is concerned I never, ever convert to b&w using grayscale, I always use the channel mixer. I think the problem with that one is that the lighting was just way too harsh. However, with the exception of #6 and #4 I don't see how these are over processed. As a matter of fact there was very little processing done to them. There was no skin retouching or anything like that done, no neat image...what looks over processed about them?
