This will be my feeble attempt to take faidoi's place, in case he doesn't do his POTD anymore (I'm sure I won't get to it every day). I don't expect everyone to agree with me, but I just ask you to comment on the photo if you want to.
Today's pick of mine is this shot, by undieyatch. I think that the composition is perfect, and it displays a struggle for balance by the tranquil and the violent. The colors are fantastic, and the overall effect really pulls me in. |

I hoped that after my effort yesterday, faidoi would have changed is mind and come back to do HIS JOB! =))
Well.. at least there is you Steve to keep doing it.
Regarding your choice, I have seen quite a number of pics here on dpc playing with rays of light coming out from the clouds and I have played with it myself in the past (sample).
To be completely honest with you, I am unhappy with everything I saw, because the original rays are much better and cannot be really imitated by photography considering that white in a photography is a reflection while in reality is an emission (even if that does not apply to displays, but I would dare to compare a monitor with the sun..)

I really like this shot, but I'm wondering what kind of special effects are applied here. If I saw something like that in the real world I think I'd start praying for my life! I agree with the comment about a struggle. Nice job.

Steve, thank you for choosing my picture for discussion. I appreciate your interest in the image and this opportunity to discuss it. The sky is a field of view that is always interesting, it makes challenging graphic subject matter, as it is ever changing from day to night and from place to place. The inclusion of a sky gallery on this site I hope is no accident, as study of the sky by artists, photographers, and of course science has a long tradition. I especially like the dpc sky gallery and have enjoyed the pictures there. As a result of that motivation I have been taking sky pictures on and off all summer and this particular sky view was an interesting one. This photo was taken near sunset as a storm front was moving toward my location in Wisconsin from the Minnesota border on the western horizon. The image is full frame and it was taken at full zoom on my Olympus. I intentionally excluded the horizon line from the base of the picture. Photoshop processing was fairly minimal - it included (maybe curves at about 6); autocolor with some fading; resize; unsharp; and save to web. Pictoral elements include the sun peeking through the clouds; rain; and reflected rays from the sun. |
