Just curious... I thought I understood the reasons for my Gold image to be "underrated". I figured ... well, there's no real "gold", or maybe it was the "shade of gold". Or for whatever reason, some people didn't feel that it met the challenge.
But after seeing the results, I see there are so many shades of gold that scored highly, and so many un-related-to-gold images, maybe I don't understand.
Any further thoughts as to why my image scored below average?
Edit:
No sour grapes here - just looking for more comments.

Hi. Since others have helped me with this kind of question, I'll take a stab at helping you.
I voted a 5 for your shot. I don't use a voting system with specific points for various aspects. Rather, a 5 for me means you met the challenge and had an okay shot. I give out huge numbers of 5s. 6 for me means you met the challenge and grabbed me, with 7-10 being successively more WOW in the shot. For me.
With that explained, this shot didn't really grab me. It's a perfectly nice picture, but it just didn't yell "high vote." To me.
Some specifics would be:
- nothing says "gold" to me very strongly, other than the jewelry. Frankly, I probably voted you down a bit for that since it was explicitly not allowed to use jewelry.
- Her hair might be gold, but it also might be red.
Shrug. I'm sorry I don't have more detail.
Perhaps it'd help more for me to tell you a couple of shots I voted highly for that included people. You can read my comments on those shots to see why:
All of that said, again, it's a nice picture. The composition is good, the model's attractive, the lighting's good ...
So keep it up! |

i think both of those shots meet the challenge. i did not vote, however i think i would've put both in the 5-6 range because i'm not too fond of the expressions on the faces. :)

I HAD HIGH HOPES FOR MINE! I was shattered when voting started and the end result of 5.5XXX ... not sure what went wrong. I thought the shot would get above 6 for sure. The title alone was worth an extra point!!!
Whatchathink???

I thought it was worth a 6.x finish, yeah. But then I thought mine was too, and I got 5.7+... And I thought I had captured the essence of gold. I still think I have the prettiest rendering of "gold" in the challenge, whatever other flaws the image might have :-)

I can't say mine was too underated but I thought I would atleast break 5! I mean it took some planning and set-up and is in focus and composed fine. Apparently it didn't meet the challenge although nobody commented on that. Lol, I can't even get the DrAchoo 4.7-5.3 I'll comment thread. Oh well...*brushes off shoulders and focuses in on stopped motion.*

i had a almost-complete spread of voting from 1 through to 9 on my picture
And came out with an "average" 4.6. A bit disappointing really, but never mind, will try to improve. I'd be interested to know what explains how you can get such varied voting though?
I found again that the winners here were some of the pictures that I had voted quite low indeed. Ack. |

Your shot was beautiful OP but just didnt really say gold to me. mine however I think was oddly OVERrated. shadows are crazy bad , the concept bordered on offensive since i'm not really of that religon but I didnt mean it to be offensive. I was amazingly embarrassed after submitting it but just wanted a score for the WPL. it should have been in the 3's and definately not higher than my husbands score. |

I figured I would have got hammered on mine,
and at 5.5 wasn't as bad as I thought.
(Straight out of the camera with no tweaks is hard)
I was so bummed after the challenge started.
I never saw this shot and the bird in flight
(was on a bit of a time crunch as they were taken 1 hour before rollover)
UGH.
That's what I get for shooting about 100 shots of a sunset,
then finding one to use and submit it, in under an hour.

I thought this shot was underrated:
It did well in general, but I was thinking it would do even better than it had.
I still can't tell if its a sculpture/mannequin or an actual person.
Nicely done!

I did find the voting on this one a little interesting - I'm not really surprised by the score I got. However, I am surprised at the results of some of the shots that weren't really all that gold. There seems to have been a movement around here of late towards particularly rigid interpretations of challenges. On the back of that movement, I pulled an image that was quite a bit better than my submission on the basis of my fear that it might not be 'gold' enough.
I would say hooray for the open-minded voters.... but then in another challenge I'm being nailed as DNMC with a shot that, in my view, is only a smidgeon outside the box. |

I'm not. If you look at the 4th place shot in Gold... Hair = blonde. Wheat = blonde. Tan = light brown. Gold = nonexistent. Look at the comments, voters were leaving comments indicating they already knew the photog and gushing with praise about the shot. It's a fine photo for what it is. Not relevant at all though and frankly I don't see how such a mundane photo warrants such a high score.
Anyway, most challenges it seems like the most heavily PP'd shots with the biggest eye candy factor take the cake.
So the lesson to be learned is [insert your lesson learned here]. I'm not actually griping, I'm just learning the 'real' challenge rules as I participate and watch. But don't think it's about meeting the challenge above all else. |
