As mentioned earlier in this thread, that was simply an error in the script. It should be fixed soon.

CAN'T YOU PEOPLE READ? that question was answered on post 465739 of this thread.

i suspected things like this went on. it's a shame still.

I remember that thread, and the generally cool reception it received.

Perhaps the biggest mistake was for this community to ignore, or dismiss cavalierly, the indications that something may be amiss when at least two (see pawdrix's post on page 11 of this thread) of us were trying to bring their suspicions forward.

No one wants to believe the "uncool" kids could have enough friends to sway votes, nor that the "cool kids" would be so deceptive. Hence all the excuses being made for what seems to have been knowing and repeated violations of the basic DPC ruleset.

Make up your mind; do you want to be cool, or do you want to be HOT? Can't be both, I don't think...

Oh dear, let's not distract the thread. With a little research most of us could list plenty of people who have died from betrayal.

and all the other people who have queried whether the 30ish RikkiFriend accounts were voting fairly or not on other photos, let me offer this insight...

There have been studies that have shown that humans are spectacularly bad at generating "random" numbers. If Rikki's friends were trying to fake random votes, then they would have produced voting patterns that were clearly fake when D&L/SC looked into it - they would definitely not have followed the normal bell curve. The only exception would be if someone in the office had enough statistical knowledge to generate pages of random numbers that follow a variety of normal distributions, AND distributed those pages to the other people involved, AND everyone involved followed their respective page of random numbers when voting for the other entries. This seems highly unlikely to me.

And just to reaffirm what some others were saying, none of us know what was going on in Rikki's head, either at the start or later on, or to what degree he feels remorse now - he might be truly sorry or he might be sorry that he was caught, none of us can really tell (or know how he might feel in a year's time!). Any comments on his thought patterns or motivations are either speculative or projected behaviour from the commenters.

Congrats to D&L/SC for detecting this and handling what is clearly a very difficult problem.

Hot or Cool, please chill out and quit diverting the thread off-topic. Thanks.

Sorry, Paul. I didn't think an outburst of levity in the midst of these 550-odd replies would be especially objectionable...

when will the re-calc script finish?
will it be posted as a separate announcement?

One post mayn't be, but then it snowballs quickly, especially with everyone quoting everyone else in entirety every time.

Thanks. Lets hope the re-calc ends soon so we can all move on.
I'm still bitter because I think the whole incident has affected the moods of some of my friends here, and all this discussion seems to be separating us further into fractions.

I'm confused. Was Ricki involved in the presidental election?
Did Al Gore win Florida or not?
07/31/2006 11:10:25 PM · #573

I had noticed that Rikki's score graph did not follow the bell curve that other's did. It followed it except that at the end there was a huge spike at the 10's.

I am at a loss to what to say for once.....
My first contact after getting interested in DPC came from Rikki.....
He was one of the first to add me as a favorite.....
He was also there for me when I had a problem.....
I really admired his photos, and his style very much.....
I now feel like there has been a death in the family, and I am in a morning, a complete 'state of shock' and 'disappointment'.
I am just so hurt and so confussed to why he would do this to himself, but also why do this to us, his DPC family.

I have always believed in "forgiveness", but this time I am not sure, especially if this was deliberate, and it looks like it was, as it has been going on for such a long time. It is just so bad for everyone involved, as we are all part of the DPC family.

I would like to take this time in saying a very big thank to the administrators and especially to all the site counselors who have handled this in the best way possible.
Last night you handled a difficult situation, very well.....

Thank you each and everyone of you.

I personally hope we can grow from this, and become a much stronger and protective DPC community, who's love of photography, is what we all care about.....

Time may heal the hurt, but I don't think the memory will ever fade. Please don't let this situation anger or leave a poisionous taste in ones mouth.

Lets all go back to what we do best, and take photos the best way we can and enjoy life.
Lets move on, so this can be laid to rest.
Life is just to short to dwell on the disappointments, but lets look at all the positives that photography can bring.

Thank you for listening, and God bless you all.....
